Work alongside our Lead Biologists to conduct stream habitat surveys and mapping, data collection and management, and habitat restoration on the Skagit River in Newhalem, WA. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist Lead Biologists on various tasks including administrative tasks, data collection, literature reviews, data QA/QC and management and problem solving for various projects, studies, and other assignments.
- Data entry and organization, QA/QC, and basic summaries of fisheries and aquatic habitat related data.
- Perform hands-on field work including river and snorkel surveys, to estimate juvenile salmon abundance and collect data on the physical environment (e.g., water quality, channel bathymetry).
- Perform habitat assessments including mapping of stream channels survey equipment (Total Station, RTK GPS), and measuring and quantifying fish habitat, channel unit classification, large woody debris, substrate size, discharge, and water quality parameters using multiple protocols.
- Conduct data collection using tablets and paper data sheets, entry, and organization and basic summaries of fisheries and aquatic habitat related data.
- Organize field logistics, including preparing and maintaining equipment and supplies needed for field work.
EDUCATION / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Undergraduate coursework in Fisheries Science, Limnology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field. General knowledge of Pacific Northwest fish biology is a plus.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365.
- Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and automobile liability insurance.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to swim and comfortable wading in water.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- General knowledge of Pacific Northwest fish biology, aquatic or plant ecology, fish habitat requirements, fluvial geomorphology and hydrology.
- Experience conducting stream habitat surveys (USFS, CHaMP, or similar).
- First Aid certified.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be comfortable working in the aquatic environment including wading in large rivers, streams, and wetlands covering up to six miles a day.
- Must be able to climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl in a variety of weather conditions.
- Must be able to walk long distances and across a variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces.
- Travel to remote areas for 2-10 days at a time.
- Ability to travel by car to field locations for two to ten hours, as a passenger and driver.
- Possible long periods of computerized data management in an office environment.

COMPENSATION: $23 – $25 per hour (depending upon experience).
ESOP: CFS is a 100% employee-owned company. Our employee stock option plan (ESOP) is a qualified defined contribution plan. Our target ESOP contribution is 5%. Eligibility is after one year of service with an entry date of Jan 1 or July 1.
