Nexus Environmental Consultants, Inc. (Nexus) is a natural resources consulting firm specializing in state and federal permitting. Our team of scientists and other specialists routinely complete baseline characterization, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis, mitigation, and compliance projects for geothermal, mining, non-profit, ranching, solar, and governmental clients within Nevada and other western states.
Position Announcement
Nexus Environmental Consultants is seeking a Seasonal Biologist for work in northern Nevada. Duties would include but not be limited to conducting biological surveys (birds, mammals, reptiles, and others) and vegetation surveys (community mapping, noxious weeds, invasive species, and sensitive plants, and water surveys (sampling for water quality, quantity, and flow). Other tasks may be included based on workload.
This is seasonal position, overtime-eligible. The successful applicant will function as a member of the existing biological team at Nexus starting approximately May 1, 2024. The duration of the position will depend on various factors but is anticipated to last through at least August 2024.
Work Duties
- Survey for terrestrial wildlife including but not limited to: pygmy rabbits, western burrowing owl, migratory birds, raptors, springsnails, small mammals, acoustic bat surveys, lek surveys, etc.
- Survey for vegetation species, including but not limited to: vegetation community mapping, noxious weed surveys, inventories and mapping, sensitive plant surveys, etc.
- Survey for surface water resources, including but not limited to: collecting water quality samples, measuring seep and stream flow, documenting field parameters, and recording field conditions.
- Provide technical assistance on report preparation using survey findings.
Requirements
- Current enrollment in or completion of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, or a related field required.
- Experience in the western United States conducting similar work ideal, but not required.
- Travel up to 75% required, camping may be required.
- Ability to work in remote, rural conditions.
- Ability to work independently and with others.
- Ability to hike up to 10 miles or more.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Attention to detail and note taking.
- Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to safety and Nexus safety protocols and standards.
- Plant identification skills a plus.
