The Opportunity:

As a seasonal ecologist with Harmil Environmental Limited, you will be expected to carry out
field surveys to assist in data collection for a variety of our projects.

We are looking for seasonal ecologists across the United Kingdom and will consider applicants
from all regions. However, our main location would be:

  • Head Office: The New Barn, Gawsworth Business Court, Congleton, Cheshire, CW12 2FQ

The office is located within the tranquil, rural setting of Gawsworth with excellent panoramic
views of the countryside.

The successful candidates will get appropriate training and supervision to not only develop
their skill and knowledge, but to give them a strong foothold for a career in ecology. Harmil
Environmental have a strong emphasis on career progression. Opportunities to progress within

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the existing ecology team in working on a variety of projects
  • Field Surveys for a variety of species (including, but not limited to, botany, bats, birds,
    great crested newts and reptiles)
  • Report Writing
  • Sound and video data analysis of data gathered during the surveys
  • Ecological Clerk of Works roles

Harmil Environmental Limited is a multi-disciplinary company covering a number of different
sectors that has been operating for the past 8 years. We are an expanding company whose ethos

As part of our ecology team, we employ a number of staff over the peak survey season which can
run from April through to October. The successful candidates will work within the highly
regarded ecology branch, also trading as Elite Ecology.

Our main focus is to efficiently complete projects for our clients, whilst ensuring the
protection and enhancement of the natural world during the planning process and within private
projects.

Our vision is to offer as many services as possible to a wide variety of clientele nationwide,
once again during the planning process and within private projects. We aim to continually
expand, with a variety of new career opportunities likely to arise in the future.

We will provide comprehensive one-to-one training of standard survey techniques following the
relevant good practice guidelines and will assist the successful candidate in working towards a
continuous learning and development (CLAD) plan to help develop their knowledge and skills.
This is a requirement of CIEEM and will hopefully be used to inform potential future roles
within the company.

We will also provide training for report writing skills to ensure accuracy and deadlines are
met.

Person Specification:

The ideal candidate will fulfill a variety of criteria.

Desirable:

  • A full UK Driving Licence
  • A degree in ecology, conservation, natural sciences or a relevant subject
  • Good written English skills
  • The ability to work in a team and on their own
  • Good communication skills
  • The ability to manage a busy workload which may be subject to change at short notice
  • A good base knowledge of UK species and Identification skills (Training will be given)

Optional:

  • An ecological specialism
  • Previous relevant professional experience in the ecological sector
  • Hold protected species survey licence(s)
  • Be a member of, or have eligibility for membership of, CIEEM or a relevant professional
    body
  • Understand relevant environmental legislation in force in the UK
  • Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) experience
  • Experience with a Geographic Information System (GIS), preferably QGIS or ArcGIS.
  • Understanding of the principles and execution of Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Valid CSCS card.
  • Experience with Bat Sound Analysis
