Position Summary

The Seasonal Visual Resource Inventory Crew Leader will report to the Visual Resource Manager and work with a core team of agency, ATC staff, and trained volunteers to complete a detailed visual resource inventory of all 90+ A.T. viewpoints in Northern and Central Virginia. This role will lead and manage a team of 3 technicians) ensure timely delivery to meet all project milestones. This work will require hiking to designated viewpoints and collecting data using the National Park Service Enjoy the View protocol. Fieldwork trips may require multi-day backpacking and camping. The Visual Resource Inventory process is used to identify scenic quality and importance for views within and extending beyond the Appalachian Trail (A.T). 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Upload, organize and perform quality checks on data.
  • Work in a close partnership team with the other Visual Resource Inventory Technicians, the Visual Resource Inventory Project Manager and volunteers. 
  • Adhere to data recording protocols.
  • Perform fieldwork cataloguing the A.T. views and vistas in Virginia.
  • Regularly use technology including a GPS, mirrorless camera with manual functions, ArcGIS software, scanner and computer. 
  • Assure the quality and organization of detailed monitoring data. 
  • Travel to and from work sites, camping at or near work sites as appropriate. (Some gear may be provided as needed) 
  • Organize, inventory, and maintain tools, supplies and equipment.  
  • Assist with volunteer training and instruction. 
  • Collaborate with ATC staff, volunteer clubs, and partner organizations in project planning, development, and reporting.  
  • Take responsibility for ensuring all equipment is in good working order before heading out to the field. 
  • Acts as a resource for Technicians, helping meet their needs and enabling them to perform high-quality, fulfilling work.
  • Take responsibility for crew vehicles, including fueling and notifying Project Manager in case of maintenance or safety issues.
  • Point person for volunteers and emergency contact when PM is off-site.
  • Keeps in frequent contact with Program Manager when PM is off-site.
  • Conducts research related to the scenic, cultural, and historical importance of viewpoints and viewsheds. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Visual Resource Program Manager.  

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability of exceptional attention to detail and ability to follow protocols and workflows. 
  • Familiarity and experience using GPS technology and ArcGIS software desired.
  • Commitment to ATC management and resource protection efforts.
  • Experience working independently. 
  • Experience leading or managing others. 
  • Effectively communicate with individuals, groups, and partners.
  • Ability to live independently and work in a remote area with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience working without direct supervision.
  • Proven ability to lead a team of individuals and ensure timely delivery of the goals given. 
  • Training or education and/or experience in any of the following: conservation, resource management, recreation, environment. Academic experience or course work in environmental studies, recreation management, natural resources management, forestry, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in collaborating with volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
  • Basic knowledge of Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s cooperative management system preferred.
  • Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator desirable, awareness training is provided.
  • Current Wilderness First-Aid, or higher, and CPR certification is required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • May be exposed to hazardous physical conditions and seasonal exposure to extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, humidity, intense heat, and sunlight.
  • Must be able to hike for extended periods and perform routine moderate lifting carrying up to 35 pounds in a backpack over a minimum of five miles through rough, uneven terrain, and wet, and slippery surfaces. 
  • Long days in the field, typically 40 hours per week.
  • Possible exposure to ticks and pests, extreme weather, and hazards typical of a backcountry environment.
  • Regular use of a computer is required; Microsoft Office, Office 365, ESRI GIS, NPS database, ADP, NetSuite, RIMS, and Google applications are used.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and access to a reliable personal vehicle.

Additional Information:

  • Term Length: Approximately May 28, 2024 – September 27, 2024
  • Hourly Rate: $22.00
  • Location/Region required to work from: Virginia.
  • Housing Stipend provided.
  • Benefits: 1 hour of sick time per 30 hours worked.
