Purpose of the Role

White Buffalo Inc. is seeking a Wildlife Technician to serve as a field-based member of the White Buffalo team for ungulate population management from October 2024 through late February or early March 2025. The successful candidate will assist with a number of projects that are related to lethal and nonlethal control of ungulates.

Necessary Attributes for Position

The position requires a strong commitment to White Buffalo’s mission and impeccable integrity. The ability to be a positive member of a small, highly motivated team in the face of demanding field conditions, long hours and months away from home is critical. Attention to detail and the ability to track multiple tasks simultaneously without sacrificing quality is essential. One of the most important aspects of our projects is the ability to foster and maintain strong relationships with WBI team members.

Responsibilities

The Wildlife Technician will function as an integral member of a small field-based team consisting of wildlife biologists and veterinarians. This supporting position requires extensive travel and limited time off during the primary field season between the dates listed above. A variable work schedule depending on weather and seasonal conditions is the norm and will commonly require night shifts.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or completed an associate or bachelor’s degree in wildlife science or a related field in natural resources.
  • Able to maintain a professional attitude at all times while working with WBI staff and members of other organizations who may have varying missions, opinions, and personalities.
  • Applicants must be physically fit, maintaining an ability to perform efficiently under physically demanding conditions, including lifting heavy objects, walking variable terrain while carrying a backpack, and persevering in hot or cold environments.
  • Able to live harmoniously in small group settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity, approachability, and willingness to listen to team members to learn from their best ideas.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, ability to solve problems with limited supervision, pay extreme attention to details, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness and ability to spend significant time in the field away from home. Field deployments can run 2 months or longer.
  • Strong mechanical and technical troubleshooting abilities.
  • Candidates should be familiar with the safe operation of various hand and power tools such as electric chainsaws and hedge trimmers.
  • Experience operating 4WD trucks.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Work experience in conservation or wildlife management related projects.
  • Experience hunting and/or safely using firearms.
  • Experience in wildlife population control and/or eradication including baiting, capture and camera surveys.

This is a temporary position for the 2024/2025 fall and winter field season; the extension of this position will be contingent upon successful performance and project funding. That said, there is potential for the successful candidate to become a long-term member of our team after this appointment ends. Compensation is competitive and will be based upon the applicant’s work and educational experience. Travel and living costs will be covered during field deployments.

HOW TO APPLY

Submit a cover letter and current resume (no longer than 2 pages total) highlighting experience with wildlife science and/or conservation experience, technical field skills, firearms and other applicable experience.
