Roles and Responsibilities:You will work in a fast-paced and changing environment and must be willing to work with and support other team members and prioritise as needed. There will be opportunities for taking on corporate responsibilities within the Mission. The successful candidate will be managed by the Legal Counsellor and will work with both the Legal Adviser and the Legal Counsellor.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, those outlined below:

  • Assist the Legal Counsellor and Legal Adviser in providing advice to UKMis colleagues on a wide range of legal issues including the interpretation and application of draft UN resolutions, treaties, legislation, and other instruments governing the work and interests of the UK and UKMis.
  • Attending and participating in UN meetings, negotiations, and other external events, as well as developing strong working relationships with counterparts from other Missions.
  • Providing regular and prompt reporting and analysis to colleagues in London on developments at the UN and, as appropriate, seeking instructions on UK positions to be adopted in our engagements with these institutions.
  • Providing advice on strategy and procedure to UKMis colleagues and officials in London.
  • Carrying-out research on and analysis of a wide-range of diverse and important legal issues, as well as preparing briefing papers.
  • Assisting in the organisation of events, seminars and meetings led by the Legal Team as well as assisting with visits by officials and Ministers from London.
  • The job-holder will also have an opportunity to play a role in the corporate activities of UKMis.
  • The job description may evolve to cover areas of work beyond those listed, depending on the Legal Team’s requirements.

Resources Managed:This position will also oversee budget management and reporting of the legal team Travel and Representational budgets (approx $10,000).Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*).
  • An ability to work effectively as part of a small team, including by demonstrating flexibility, initiative, and time management skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong representational and interpersonal skills, including an ability to build and maintain professional relationships with colleagues both internally and externally.
  • Tertiary qualification in international relations, law or other relevant field or equivalent level experience.
  • Willingness to work additional hours as necessary, especially during the Sixth Committee peak periods in October and November.
  • Proficient IT skills, particularly in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Visa sponsorship for this role may be considered but cannot be guaranteed. The UK Mission to the UN (UKMIS) may sponsor a G visa in exceptional circumstances.

  • Some knowledge of multilateral institutions, including the United Nations
  • Familiarity with the UK Government

Working patterns (If the job is suitable for flexible working patterns, please provide details):Normal working hours are 40 hours per week Monday – Friday. Daily working hours to be agreed on appointment.
