The Role and Department
As Security Risk Manager, you will contribute, as part of a team, to the development of a robust security culture across the University. You will be responsible for providing professional, strategic, proportionate security advice to key stakeholders across the University to assure operations against a full spectrum of threats.
You will support the development, rollout and implementation of the corporate strategy for protective (physical) security, conducting Security Risk Assessments, to provide recommendations aimed at protecting University assets and functions, in line with the University’s vision to enable safe implementation.
You will provide intelligence-led information on potential risks and threats to a wide-range of customers across the University, to aid decision-making.
You will also support the Estates and Facilities Directorate, to ensure security risks are considered and managed in all refurbishment and new-build projects.
The Estates and Facilities Directorate provides essential services to Durham University and is responsible for managing, maintaining, and developing the infrastructure and building fabric of the various campuses.

Essential Criteria
Qualifications/Experience
1. Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience).
2. Professional practitioner in Protective (Physical) Security Risk Management with appropriate and relevant working knowledge of crime prevention and counter terrorism.
3. Recognised professional protective (physical) security practitioner with demonstrable specialist knowledge and expertise in the delivery of services used to influence events and activities within a complex organisation.
4. Experience of implementing policies and procedures and supporting change and service improvements.
5. Experience of providing specialist protective (physical) security risk management advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues, including more senior colleagues in a complex organisation.
6. Evidence of competence in establishing, creating and reviewing security requirements, security strategies and security plans for refurbishment and new build projects.
7. Experience of participating in internal or external networks, relevant to security risk management, to share and discuss good practice, develop strong and productive working relationships and positively influence the University’s reputation.
8. Knowledge and experience of ensuring compliance with regulatory, organisational policy and best practice guidelines related to protective (physical) security, including crime prevention and counter terrorism measures such as those expected from the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) draft bill (Martyn’s Law).
Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
9. Excellent spoken and written communication skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.
10. Strong digital competence across a range digital devices and apps including [digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, business systems].
11. Evidence of competence (skills, knowledge and experience) in implementing protective (physical) security frameworks and methodologies, including undertaking security threat and vulnerability risk assessments, developing preparedness plans and implementing proportionate systems and measures that work alongside other requirements (business needs, health and safety, fire safety, business continuity etc.).
12. Committed to continuing professional development to maintain professional recognition.
13. Knowledge and experience of ensuring compliance with regulatory and organisational policy and guidelines.
14. Ability to contribute to planning at operational and strategic levels.
15. Ability to solve problems and decide on and plan appropriate solutions.
Desirable Criteria
1. Certified security practitioner, e.g., ASIS Certified Physical Security Professional (PSP) or Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Chartered Security Professional.
2. Knowledge of the Intelligence Cycle.
3. Experience in using a range of intelligence analysis tools.
4. Experience applying Intelligence Preparation of the Environment (IPE).
5. Experience conducting security investigations.
6. Held an instructional post or conducted training to validate emergency action plans.
7. Experience with scenario generation.

Service Delivery/Development

· Seek feedback from key stakeholders so that the service is being adapted to meet customer expectations and to plan future requirements.
· Analyse data on the level of service being provided by your area to recommend areas for future improvement.
· Meet the development needs of your stakeholders, providing training when required.
Communication/Liaison
· Provide advice and share guidance with your stakeholders to ensure that the University’s policies, procedures and regulations are complied with.
· Use your operational expertise to lead and participate in business meetings, working groups and sub-committees.
· Coordinate and organise committees and other business meetings and deal with any related complaints.
· Update policies and procedures in response to any internal or external changes.
· Use your expertise to provide training or guidance to other stakeholders.
