Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Operations Security Section is located within the Office of Confidentiality and Security, which is responsible for the provision of safe workplaces for staff members, visitors, delegates, and the protection of OPCW assets.

 

The Operations Security Section is in search of a well-qualified and experienced Security Sergeant to join the team.

 

The main objectives of this position are, the preservation of order and the protection of persons/people, information and assets on the Technical Secretariat premises, provision of effective supervision of the security guard force through inter alia, the application of tools, processes and procedures outlined in security policies and plans issued by OCS management, and the maintenance of a secure and safe environment in OPCW premises and leading the first response from Security Officers to any security or safety incidents, accidents or breaches.

Main Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Operations Security, the incumbent performs the following duties:

Supervise and manage the 24/7 Security Guard Force:

  • Supervises security officers and security guards and carries out inspections to ensure that officers and guards on duty are discharging their functions appropriately and in accordance with established practices and procedures;
  • Conducts daily briefings and assign officers and guards to various functions or posts as required;
  • Examines routine reports prepared by subordinates, including routine entries to electronic logbooks and reporting systems, and certifies their content, quality, and accuracy. Ensures that necessary reporting regarding tasks is completed on time and as required.

Qualifications and Experience

Education

Essential:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Additional security or military training is required.

Desirable:

  • Education in team leadership roles from a police or military academy.

Desired Certification:

  • Security supervisor or security management certifications.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential:

  • Minimum of four years’ experience working as a team leader in an operational security context involving security officers armed with defensive or other weapons;
  • Experience in areas of security operations within a physical security service[, including physical security, personal protection, strategic and operational planning, fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical and hazardous material response, video imaging badge systems and methods of instruction, or related areas.

 

Desirable:

Languages

Fluency in English is essential and a good working knowledge of one of the other official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is desirable.

Additional Information

Staff members in the General Services category are normally recruited and paid on a local basis.

This fixed-term appointment is for the duration of two years, with a six-month probationary period, and is subject to the OPCW Staff Regulations and Interim Staff Rules.

The mandatory age of separation at the OPCW is 65 years.

The Director-General retains the discretion to not make any appointment to this vacancy, to make an appointment at a lower grade, or to make an appointment with a modified job description. Several vacancies may be filled.

Fixed-term staff members participate in the OPCW Provident Fund. A monthly staff contribution is met with a doubled amount by the OPCW under the provisions for social security. As the OPCW is exploring membership of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF), staff participation in the Provident Fund may be replaced by participation in the UNJSPF effective 1 January 2025.
