Lower Columbia Fish Enhancement Group is seeking interested individuals to intern with 
our 2024/25 Environmental Education Program: Seeds to Salmon. 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Seeds to Salmon is an outdoor learning opportunity for high school and middle school students that explores the interdependence of salmon and healthy watersheds. The program also promotes the production of native plants by involving students in hands-on plant propagation. This is a great opportunity to make a difference and be part of a conservation-minded team working to restore fish habitat in southwest Washington.  

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This is a temporary, part-time (15-20 hours per week) internship that will assist LCFEG’s Outreach and Education Coordinator in facilitating the Seeds to Salmon program with local high school students. The intern will be required to attend and assist, LCFEG’s Outreach and Education Program Manager in planning and participating in class lessons throughout the 2024/25 school year.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with curriculum development 
  • Help with lesson planning 
  • Attend salmon in schools programming 
  • Participate in all event planning/hosting 
  • Aid in nursery maintenance/inventory   

LOCATION: LCFEG’s main office in Vancouver, Washington. A work vehicle, operated by LCFEG staff, will be used for transportation for field days.  

START & END DATE: August 1, 2024 (preferably), through May 31, 2025 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Dependable transportation to/from the LCFEG office 
  • Highschool degree and an interest in urban and community forestry, salmon recovery, conservation biology, restoration, ecology, botany, science communications, environmental education, and/or related topics 
  • Over 18 years of age Interest in native plant nursery management  
  • Pacific Northwest native plant identification (or enthusiastic willingness to learn)  
  • Willingness to work in teams, and perform in front of a group of students  
  • Interest and experience with social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram 
  • Ability to perform physical work in a variety of field conditions, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time 
  • Must be willing and able to work up to 20 total hours/week 

COMPENSATION: $20 per hour

ABOUT LCFEG: LCFEG is a nonprofit salmon habitat restoration organization and one of Washington’s 14 regional fisheries enhancement groups. We are working to restore rivers and streams for the benefit of wild salmon populations in the Lower Columbia Basin. We contribute to the long-term recovery of the Northwest’s salmonids by planting trees to restore functional riparian areas, stacking large wood to improve habitat complexity, placing fish carcasses in streams, and educating and engaging the community.
