Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries, while strengthening the capabilities of governments and the private sector in those countries to create and sustain high-quality health systems that can succeed without our assistance. For more information, please visit: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org.

CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

Overview of CHAI’s Non-Communicable Diseases Program:

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, and diabetes are now the leading cause of death globally, exceeding all communicable disease deaths combined. The WHO estimates over 41 million NCD-related deaths annually, with 85% occurring in low- to middle-income countries. More than 41% of these deaths are premature, affecting individuals under 70. Children and adolescents are also significantly impacted, particularly by conditions like type 1 diabetes, sickle cell disease, and congenital heart disease. Access to diagnosis and treatment is often limited, leading to under-diagnosis, high health costs, and inequities in life expectancy and quality of life.

To support governments in addressing these urgent challenges, in 2021, CHAI initiated an ambitious program to improve access to adequate and affordable diagnosis and care for NCDs. Since then this program has expanded rapidly to 12 CHAI countries across Africa and South East to address barriers to comprehensive diagnosis and care through decentralized care at the primary healthcare level, policy support, financing, procurement, data systems, and global market shaping for essential NCD commodities, as well as strengthening collaboration across partners working on improving access to NCD diagnosis and care.

In Ghana, CHAI kickstarted its NCD program, focusing on closing the Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) diagnosis gap by implementing multiple interventions to improve detection of early and strengthen timely diagnosis and treatment of T1D in children and adolescents. To further build our NCD portfolio in Ghana, CHAI intends to implement a broader project to expand access to essential care for diabetes and hypertension at the primary health care (PHC) level by strengthening health system enablers, generating demand, and shaping the market for prioritized PEN and PEN-Plus commodities.
