The Therapeutic Community program offers a holistic treatment experience for those seeking help for problematic drug or alcohol use. To enhance individual motivation for change, the Therapeutic Community combines meaningful work and recreational activities, with therapeutic group work and skills development, in a physically and psychologically safe environment.

About this opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced Clinician to join our team and support the admissions process for our 3 therapeutic communities (Lower Plenty, Hope Centre & Circuit Breaker), located across Victoria!

You will work under direction of the Team Leader – Admissions and your expertise will be sought to provide leadership and support to other clinicians within the team.

You will directly engage with clients whilst they await services, supporting them to understand the program, undertake medical withdrawal as indicated and become ready and motivated for change.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Supporting the Team Leader to implement change, clinical initiatives and review client focused clinical practice.
  • Ensure that all AOD Clinicians are appropriately supported, professionally supervised, and provided with regular feedback regarding their performance.
  • Develop AOD Clinicians and other Clinical Team members in their client understanding and decision making.
  • Provide clinical support the Admissions team AOD Clinicians to better meet the needs of their clients.
  • Participate in clinical team meetings and communicate/liaise between clinical and medical staff regarding pre-admission clients on key medications, e.g., anti-psychotic, anti-depressant, strong pain management, to ensure informed and coordinated care.
  • Assess suitability of clients and gather information to identify risk and ensure success in the therapeutic community program.
  • Actively engage with and hold clients creating readiness for change.
  • Participate in information sessions (providing specific information about the residential facility including processes and expectations of living in the facility).
  • Provide clients with psychoeducation regarding safety/harm reduction whilst living in the wider community.
  • Discuss and assess psycho-social factors noting any risk factors and liaising with admission team regarding an immediate concern.
  • Maintain best practice knowledge in addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions.

A week in the role:

If you were here last week, you would have:

  • Attended a weekly team clinical review.
  • Supported Information sessions and prep-groups for clients.
  • Took part in fortnightly team self-care activities such as meditation, team lunch, walks or games.

Key Selection Criteria:

We are looking for an experienced and passionate individual to provide clinical leadership to our admissions team while also holding a caseload of clients, awaiting admissions to one of our therapeutic communities.

To be successful in this role, you must have…

  • A Degree/Tertiary qualification, or an Associate Diploma with substantial experience in Alcohol & Other Drugs, Mental Health or Allied Health.
  • AOD competencies for Health Professionals or a commitment to obtain the competencies within 12 months of employment* (Refer Appendix A)
  • Excellent case management skills and the ability to work with difficult and demanding clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage clients in dialogue and develop a therapeutic relationship.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of high-quality therapeutic service delivery, coupled with a strong theoretical and practice base in the principles of recovery, and a commitment to community education and health promotion.
  • High-level stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships and communicate with a wide variety of audiences.
  • Well-developed capacity to continuously review and make responsive changes where needed to ensure a high standard of service delivery.

*Appendix A (AOD Competencies)

OHV requires staff in clinical positions to have the following competencies (or their equivalent). Where people do not already have these competencies, OHV will invest in the staff’s professional development by providing them through our registered training organisation (RTO).
The competencies required in the first 12 months of employment are:

  • CHCAOD001 – Work in an alcohol and other drugs context
  • CHCAOD004 – Assess needs of clients with alcohol and other drugs issues
  • CHCAOD006 – Provide interventions for people with alcohol and other drugs issues
  • CHCAOD009 – Develop and review individual alcohol and other drugs treatment plans
