Are you passionate about animal care, conservation, and creating unforgettable experiences for guests of all ages? The St. Louis Aquarium is seeking a Senior Aquarist to lead day-to-day husbandry operations within our Life Sciences Department. This is a unique opportunity to work hands-on with a diverse collection of aquatic and terrestrial species while helping to shape and inspire a talented team of aquarists.

What You’ll Do:

As our Senior Aquarist, you’ll play a vital role in maintaining the health and wellbeing of all animals under our care. You’ll lead by example—ensuring habitats are thriving, procedures are followed, and team members are supported and developed. Your days will be dynamic: one moment you’re supporting a new habitat build, the next you’re collaborating with educators, responding to a health concern, or mentoring a new aquarist.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Supervise daily Life Sciences operations and mentor Animal Care staff
  • Maintain compliance with safety and animal welfare standards
  • Monitor animal health, maintain records, and coordinate treatment plans
  • Collaborate with veterinary, water quality, and guest experience teams
  • Support new exhibits and conservation-focused education initiatives
  • Ensure strong communication and leadership across the department

What We’re Looking For:

  • 3+ years of hands-on animal husbandry experience
  • Degree in marine/wildlife biology or related experience
  • Proficiency in aquatic life support systems, water quality, and habitat care
  • Background in both freshwater and saltwater systems; experience with reptiles, amphibians, birds, or small mammals is a plus
  • Open Water Dive Certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills
  • CPR, AED, and Emergency O2 certification (or ability to obtain)

Why Join Us?

At the St. Louis Aquarium, we’re more than just a facility—we’re a team driven by purpose, passion, and a commitment to animal care and education. You’ll find a supportive environment, opportunities to grow, and the chance to make a meaningful impact every day.

The Details:

  • Weekend, holiday, and occasional evening shifts required
  • Full-time role with competitive benefits and opportunities for advancement
  • Work at one of the Midwest’s most exciting and innovative aquariums!

Ready to dive into your next adventure?
Apply today and help us care for animals, educate guests, and inspire conservation at the St. Louis Aquarium!
