We are currently seeking an experienced Archaeologist/Cultural Resources Manager for the position of Principal Investigator in the Pacific Northwest. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. Position may be based in our Portland, OR, Bothell, WA, or Boise, ID offices. Working part-time a possibility.

The preferred candidate will be a resident of the region. Applicants should be available to travel to project sites in the Pacific Northwest as necessary for site visits and fieldwork duties. Prior work experience in the region is required. Prior experience with state-level renewable energy permitting requirements preferred. Experience working with local tribes a plus.

Projects will primarily be renewable energy-related in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, but additional types of projects throughout the US can be expected. Required tasks include leading surveys, NRHP-eligibility evaluations, consulting with state and federal agencies and tribes, writing and reviewing reports, proposals and budgeting, and customer service.

Your Role:

  • Act as Principal Investigator for cultural resources surveys and analyses.
  • The candidate will provide support to Tetra Tech’s cultural resources and renewable energy environmental compliance team in the western US, leading cultural resource surveys and tasks in the Pacific Northwest, typically as part of larger permitting, compliance, or due diligence efforts.
  • Provide regulatory compliance support for Federal, state, municipal, and commercial clients.
  • Work with a geographically dispersed team and meet multiple, simultaneous deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Write, edit, and peer-review cultural resources technical reports for various clients and agencies.
  • Contribute to local, state, and federal regulatory compliance or permitting documents.

Qualifications:

  • Possess a MA or higher degree in anthropology or archaeology and meet the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualifications for Archaeology.
  • Minimum 10-20+ years of professional experience in cultural resources management (CRM) with a pattern of progressive achievements.
  • Minimum 10-15+ years of prior experience in CRM in a supervisory capacity.
  • Expertise conducting cultural resource surveys and evaluating resources for NRHP and/or state register eligibility in the Pacific Northwest. Experience with ArcGIS Online or other GIS-based field apps a plus.
  • Sound knowledge of soils, geomorphology, and how to describe them.
  • Able to write cultural resource reports for Section 106, due diligence, and state or county permit projects in a timely fashion.
  • Excellent writing skills. (Writing samples welcome.)
  • Experience with ESRI, Adobe, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint).
  • Experience conducting surveys, test excavations, and data recovery projects.
  • Knowledgeable of federal, state, and local historic preservation and cultural resources regulations. Experience writing cultural resource sections of NEPA and state-level permit applications (i.e. OR EFSC, WA SEPA or EFSEC) a plus.
  • Ability to be permitted as a Principal Investigator on BLM, USFS, and State lands in OR, WA and ID.
  • Experience working with Oregon, Washington, and/or Idaho SHPOs. Experience working with and guiding clients through consultations with Native American tribes and/or THPOs a plus.
  • Project or task management experience, able to propose on projects, knowledgeable with the wind and solar permitting requirements as they pertain to cultural resources in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Experience managing CRM projects or tasks, including ability to effectively manage a budget, invoicing, schedules, personnel allocation/planning, manage field crews, and work as an integral part of a widely dispersed team.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen in compliance with state law.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Compensation:

Salary commensurate with experience.

Salary Range: $80,000 – $95,000

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 35 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.
  • Performs manual labor including excavation with shovels.
  • Availability to work extended field rotations (sometimes 10-12 days at a time).
