Job Overview

Georgetown University is in search of a dynamic information technology (IT) professional to step into the role of Senior Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO), tasked with leading the University Information Services (UIS) team. Reporting to the Vice President for Strategic Operations & Technology, the CIO will play a pivotal role in advancing the University’s mission by developing and implementing technology strategies that enrich the academic, research, residential and administrative experiences of faculty, students, and staff.

The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with both academic and administrative leaders across the university to formulate and refine strategies and processes aimed at delivering high-quality service to all stakeholders.

Among the key responsibilities, the CIO will drive the ongoing modernization of the university’s technology infrastructure and systems, lead the adoption of emerging technologies, implement cutting-edge technologies within classroom and research environments, establish support models to ensure the community receives prompt and reliable service, develop an organizational ability to lead and drive major projects, and fortify data, systems, and privacy protections against increasingly frequent and sophisticated cyber threats.

Work Interactions

The CIO will lead and manage approximately 170 IT professionals in UIS along with ongoing collaboration and engagement with academic and administrative leaders around the University.

Requirements and Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this opportunity will be a highly skilled and talented technology executive with multifaceted expertise and skills. The university seeks candidates with exceptional strategic, technological, management and operational skills, and whose career preferably includes experience as a senior IT leader in a comparable higher education environment. Candidates must also have a demonstrated track record of successfully executing strategies, innovations, and transformative initiatives.

The specific qualifications and experience we seek include the following:

  • At least 10 years of experience in progressively senior IT leadership positions and a background that reflects the ability to thrive in a higher education environment
  • Leadership and span of control experience that encompasses successful management and mentoring of a large team of IT professionals – preference for a demonstrated track record of instilling a culture of accountability
  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field with relevant experience; Master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of and leadership experience in higher education IT security, infrastructure modernization, enterprise systems, cloud-based solutions, academic technology, building technology, IT project management, and customer support models

Additionally, candidates should possess the following leadership and management competencies:

  • Solid business acumen in IT principles and understanding of varied business operations and industries
  • Skill in fiscal and budget management for a large technology organization
  • Significant experience in developing business cases for implementation of technologies and organizational models and structures
  • Strong management skills and the ability to lead a diverse and talented workforce
  • Ability to establish trust, credibility and influence with all levels of institutional leadership
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and individuals to accomplish goals and effectively maintain relationships
  • Demonstrated leadership skills that reflect a commitment to the University’s values and the ability to provide vision and guidance to varied operational areas
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to provide clear direction with a results-oriented style, both within and outside the organization
  • Sensitivity for, and understanding of, academic disciplines and issues; ability to collaborate with faculty
