The Communication team uses broad communication outreach and specific techniques such as public advocacy and behavior change communication to mobilize citizens and the private sector to engage for children and their rights. To achieve these goals the Communication team collaborates closely with Programmes to advance programmatic priorities of UNICEF in Brazil and with the Private Sector Fundraising Section to mobilize financial and non-financial resources in support of the UNICEF programme.

Social and digital media are key channels that UNICEF will use to communicate and engage directly in two-way and multi-way exchanges with the public on a daily basis. These digital activities will have one main purpose: to secure the public’s involvement with children’s rights.

The Communication Associate (GS7) will work in Brasilia office under the supervision of the Digital Communication Specialist, providing support to the implementation of digital and social media strategies.

How can you make a difference?

Under general supervision of the Digital Communication Specialist, this post is responsible for the ongoing improvement, expansion, and maintenance of the UNICEF-Brazil website, including through interactive functions for different age groups of children and adolescents. It is also responsible for the translation to Portuguese of key global documents and reports as well as press statements. It provides vital editorial support to Communication, Programme and Fundraising Specialists and for media interviews to the appropriate Communication or Programme Specialist.

 

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  • Based on UNICEF relevant guidelines, manage the UNICEF-Brazil website, including overall content curatorship and editing, design and posting of new material (via CMS- Content Management System), ensuring regular and frequent updates, liaising with partners in establishing interactive sites for the different age-groups, recommending and establishing linkages with other websites, staying abreast of the latest Internet technologies and recommending action where needed (eg, purchase of new software).
  • Provide information on regular basis to partners for inclusion in their websites, including but not limited to the Globo network and others.  Identifies new partners that will accept UNICEF information in their websites.
  • Coordinate the translation of global documents into Portuguese and facilitate the production and dissemination. 
  • Provide technical and logistical support to special events such as press conferences; visits by donors, journalists, and others; and meetings.
  • Providing proofreading and editorial support to UNICEF publications and co-publications.
  • Provide other support as requested.

 

To qualify as a champion for every child you will have…

Education:

Completion of secondary education is required, preferably supplemented by technical or university degree in Communication, Marketing, Public Relations or similar.

 

Experience:

A minimum of seven years of work experience in the field of Communication.

Three years’ experience in website design and maintenance required. Familiarity with national and international media desirable.

For this position, a bachelor’s degree from a recognized academic institution in a relevant field may replace three years of related work experience.

 

Language Requirements:

Proficiency in English and fluency in Portuguese are required.

Knowledge of Spanish is an asset.
