Job Description Summary
The Senior Director of Development is responsible for established and growing portfolio consisting of a majority of individual major and principal gift level ($250,000 and above) and select institutional (corporate and foundation) prospects for select areas within the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Abramson Cancer Center and Department of Radiation Oncology unit. Supervises and/or coordinates all fundraising activities required for this portfolio. Responsibilities include strategies for outright gifts and planned gifts for prospective donors, including structuring and coordinating development staff, volunteer and physician interaction with prospects. Raises $3+ million annually from assigned portfolio and oversees fundraising of assigned staff and their fundraising goals; oversees all moves management for the assigned portfolio including priority clinical departments and program areas within ACC. Serves as the primary liaison for the Clinical Department chairs, leadership, and faculty of related key basic science areas. Plays a leadership role in management and mentoring unit staff, monitoring and enhancing unit metrics, and achieving priority objectives for the grateful patient and clinical areas for UPHS and ACC. Assists in senior-level staffing of the Abramson Cancer Center Director’s Leadership Council (ACCDLC) and the Abramson Cancer Center’s Innovation Advisory Board (IAB).
Working closely with the Senior Executive Director of Development as a senior member of the ACC team, the Senior Director of Development co-manages one Assistant Director of Development and one Development Assistant.
Job Description
Specific Responsibilities:
Develops a broad understanding of the educational, research, clinical, and financial needs and goals of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Medicine, Abramson Cancer Center, the Department of Radiation Oncology, and Cancer Biology/AFCRI.
In collaboration with department chairs, Cancer Center director and senior leadership of Penn Medicine Development and Alumni Relations, performs annual needs analysis for assigned departments, centers and institutes and develops plans to help each accomplish and meet its goals.
Leads and directs the ACC development team to achieve optimum results by:
Communicating financial and key performance indicators and results to direct reports.
Establishing goals and priorities for the Assistant Director, and unit, and ensuring goals cascade to all staff.
Managing staffing needs and identifying areas for organizational development updates or changes.
Guiding the talent identification and professional development needs, processes and outcomes within the entire division and in line with the University’s diversity and inclusion priorities.
Setting clear performance expectations and holding staff accountable for outcomes through frequent feedback and coaching.
Ensuring open communications among team members, engaging in team building efforts, and holding regular staff meetings that embrace and support the group’s diversity.
Inspiring and motivating staff to achieve optimum results for direct reports and their teams.
Develops annual scorecard initiatives and determines individual major gifts development officer goals, to monitor and to maximize performance in prospect identification, strategy development, cultivation, and solicitation activities.
Personally maintains and staffs a portfolio of key principal and major gifts prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, medical center leaders and volunteers, including the Dean of the School of Medicine, key members of the Penn Medicine and administrative leadership, Director of the Abramson Cancer Center, as well as volunteers including the Penn Medicine Development Cabinet, Abramson Cancer Center Director’s Leadership Council (ACCDLC), and the Abramson Cancer Center’s Innovation Advisory Board (IAB).
Serves as primary development staff for the department chairs and center/institute leadership. Coordinates and oversees development activity for these and other key areas across the UPHS and ACC system. Monitoring progress of frontline staff toward goals for these and all areas and providing regular updates to Penn Medicine leadership related to activity for those areas.
Meets regularly with department chairs and other key assigned faculty members to identify major and principal gift prospects, both individual and institutional, for areas of assignment.
Works with faculty to develop personalized strategies to engage, educate, and solicit major/principal gift prospects for support of assigned areas, including the writing of proposals and development of materials supporting face-to-face solicitations.
In partnership with department chairs, Cancer Center Director, and program leaders, identifies and trains faculty in fundraising best practices.
On an annual basis, reviews assigned prospects and key donors to program areas and develops appropriate stewardship activities and reports to strengthen relationships with the Abramson Cancer Center and Penn Medicine.
Plans, coordinates and directs visits and special events for prospects and donors in the portfolio and other areas as assigned. Assists and collaborates with Abramson Cancer Center development staff to execute the broad objectives of the Abramson Cancer Center development program, including special events, ACCDLC and IAB, annual report, newsletter, and other activities.
Reports regularly to the Senior Executive Director of Development of the Abramson Cancer Center, unit leadership and other colleagues on all fundraising activity through prospect management database, Compass, and ensures that activity is on track to meet annual goals.
Collaborates with University of Pennsylvania and PMDAR leadership and development colleagues on all matters regarding assigned prospects.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in institutional development with emphasis on major gifts from individuals and/or organizations or equivalent combination of education and experience required; advanced degree desirable. At least three years in an academic medical center or a large scientific/health care research institution is preferred.
Knowledge or experience in planned giving is desired.
Ability to function independently, yet work in a centralized development structure for fundraising, participating in and contributing to a team effort.
Excellent computer, verbal and written skills essential.
Strong administrative experience, project management, and ability to establish objectives, set performance standards and organize a successful approach to achieving fundraising goals.
Possesses strategic vision and application of keen analytical skills.
Demonstrates resiliency, high motivation and capacity for hard work within the context of an intensely goal-oriented environment.
Ability to travel both locally and nationally at a limited level and must be willing to work some weekends and evenings.
Valid driver’s license is required.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
