OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The overall goal of the WHO Representative’s Office, Solomon Islands is to support health development by ensuring a functional health care system that has the capacity to deliver responsive quality services that are accessible, affordable, and equitable for all populations of Solomon Islands.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The incumbent performs work assignments that are well-defined and planned by supervisor. Instructions by the supervisor are specific and detailed on ad hoc or non-recurring jobs in accordance with established procedures, practices and guidelines. Work is reviewed on an ongoing basis by the supervisor for conformity, adherence to deadlines and overall quality. General guidelines available include local traffic rules and regulations, WHO Manual, WPR Policies and Procedures Handbook, administrative guidelines issued from time to time.

The incumbent will perform all or part of the following, and other related responsibilities as required by the needs of the office.

  • In compliance of WHO standards, coordinate the fleet management procedures including planning, maintenance, monitoring and reporting.
  • Provide reliable and secure driving services by:
    • driving office vehicles for the transport of the Head of the WHO country office, authorized personnel, including for field visits, and the delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items;
    • meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport and facilitating immigration and customs formalities, as required;
    • checking for availability of all the required documents/supplies for the country office fleet: including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts;
    • completing the monthly vehicle data form at the end of the month.
  • Manage day-to-day maintenance of the country office fleet through timely minor repairs, oil changes, checking tyres and brakes, car washing, and making arrangements for major repairs.
  • Report any incidents/ accidents as per the steps outlined in the rules and regulations
  • Provide clerical and general office assistance to office staff
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Essential: Completion of secondary education or equivalence training and valid driving license.
Desirable: Basic mechanics’ certificate and first aid training.

Experience
Essential: Minimum two years of work experience as a driver with a safe driving record.
Desirable: Experience in driving within WHO or another United Nations agency.

SKILLS

In-depth knowledge of local traffic regulations and topography of the country.
Proficient in protocol and organizational security standards for drivers
Proven mechanical knowledge and skills in operating and maintaining different types of vehicles.
Proven ability to interact positively and tactfully with diverse clients
Ability to write concise official reports of incidents, read and understand instructions in the working language.
Basic knowledge of the use of word processing, email and standard office equipment
Driving for long periods
Lifting pouch bags, some of which weigh over 25 kilograms.

REMUNERATION

WHO offers staff in the General Services category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at SBD 79,891 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
