Job title: Senior Environmental Educator
Hours: 22+ hrs per week
Duties:
Initially the successful applicant will be taking over the running of
five after-school Wildlife/Bushcraft Clubs at primary schools in
Edinburgh. Our Clubs are designed to introduce children to their local
wild places and spark a passion for wildlife, and involve many varied
and fun activities. These clubs are core hours and run Mon-Thurs 3:30-5:30 and Fridays 1-3. During the school day you may also take on the role
of helping to deliver a variety of environmental teaching projects, and
in the school holidays assisting in the running of full-day wildlife
clubs. In the winter months you will
be involved in the creation of wildlife friendly areas in school grounds
– from planting trees to building raised beds and making ponds.
Job
purpose: The purpose of this role is to inspire and enthuse children
and young adults about the natural world, whilst encouraging schools to embrace outdoor learning.
Accountabilities:
1.
Wildlife Clubs: Engage children in the activities you are running in a
fun and exciting way. Maintain the reputation and popularity of the
clubs
2. Curriculum-based teaching: Assist with and run teaching sessions in a professional manner, being aware of the necessary structure and target learning achievements. Be able to spark enthusiasm in both children and teachers/other adults who may be assisting.
3.
Communication: You must be able to communicate with parents and
teachers in a friendly and cooperative manner. Earth Calling’s
reputation is based on creating good relationships with schools and
families. It is therefore essential that you follow these standards.
4.
Promotion: It will be your responsibility to organise Wildlife Club
members and maintain waiting lists, promoting the clubs within schools
as necessary.
5. Paperwork: Organisation of club documents, planning, reports and emailing will need to be carried out at home, so a flexible attitude to working hours is highly desirable.
6.
Volunteers: You will regularly be assisted by volunteers in the running
of clubs and teaching sessions, and will be required to supervise and
manage them in a way which is beneficial to all parties.
7.
Equipment: A selection of field equipment will be provided for you to
use with children (study trays, river nets etc) which should be kept
clean and well maintained.
8. Health and Safety: The
safety of both children and staff is of paramount importance. Children
will be under your supervision and it is essential that they are aware
of rules and are supervised to the required level. You will be made
aware of necessary codes of conduct before taking over the running of
Wildlife Clubs, after which time the safety of everyone under your
supervision will be your own responsibility. You will be required to
carry out risk assessments and complete reports for each session you
run.
We may close this vacancy early if we receive
sufficient applications for the role.
Appointment to this position is subject to
the successful candidate being granted membership to the PVG Scheme by
Disclosure Scotland, receiving full clearance from the Criminal Records
Bureau, providing two satisfactory references and passing any other
relevant checks as necessary.
