Senior Environmental Scientist

Establishes, plans, and prepares internal policies and procedures for all Seed Lab functions including, mandatory testing of all seed lots for viability, moisture content, seed per pound, germination percentages, cone and seed processing, cleaning, analyzing, testing, and purifying genetically superior seed for private timberland forestland clients. *Oversees cone and seed maturity and quality assessments of seed prior to storing in the Seed Bank. *Establishes prioritization schedule for testing and tracking of seed lots based on timing and needs of CAL FIRE and other clients. *Oversees performance of all necessary activities related to seed processing including extraction from cones, drying cones, and x-ray analysis. *Develops new internal processing and handling procedures based on current science and upgrades to equipment used for testing and analyzing seed. *The incumbent will be expected to assist in the performance of all potential seed lab functions as needed.

Establishes internal policy on seed transfer, seed storage, seed sales, storage fees, and record keeping. *Arranges seed transfers for seed bank clients. *Coordinates communications and seed sales to commercial nurseries on behalf of CAL FIRE and non-industrial forest landowners including all appropriate packing, shipping, and record keeping.
