The position is assigned in the Equity Investment Unit (EIU) under the Office of the Director General (OPSD) within the Private Sector Operations Department (PSOD). PSOD provides investment capital to private sector entrepreneurs, corporates and project sponsors, as well as financial intermediaries, such as banks and private equity funds, throughout developing Asia. It catalyzes, structures, and funds investments in privately held and state-sponsored companies across a wide range of industry sectors. PSOD’s emphasis is on commercially viable transactions that generate financial returns while also delivering on ADB’s organization-wide mission to promote environmentally sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Job Purpose
The Senior Investment Specialist will be expected to lead and supervise component parts of the team and portfolio, depending upon experience, and will contribute to the build-out and development of a “best in class” equity asset and portfolio management function. The incumbent will report to Advisor, PSOD and Head, EIU and will supervise national and administrative staff.
Responsibilities
Origination and Processing
- Originate new equity investments which satisfy ADB’s development impact and financial objectives – working in close collaboration with ADB’s sector teams and Resident Missions
- Execute equity investments by playing a leading role in the deal team – taking specific responsibility for the investment thesis, the realistic financial returns, the key risks, and the exit plan.
- Manage the due diligence process – financial, commercial, operational, legal etc. – to ensure that a thorough assessment is carried out of the expected risks and return.
- Provide advice to the deal team for all direct equity investments on deal structuring, valuation, and bidding strategy.
Management of Key Accounts
- Assume primary account responsibility and relationship responsibility for assigned key accounts.
- Review or approve waivers and amendments, annual reviews, ratings, valuation reports, exit proposals and other documents submitted by EIU staff in connection with assigned key accounts.
- Perform, if assigned by Advisor, PSOD and Head, EIU, the role of director on the board of certain ADB investee companies representing ADB’s interest in accordance with the principles of sound corporate governance.
Portfolio Management
- Oversee the monitoring of the financial health and development impact of the portfolio company, ensuring that all key issues are considered and ADB’s strategic objectives are delivered.
- Monitor periodic reviews and progress reporting on project implementation. Ensuring that the portfolio company adheres to ADB’s rights that are contained in the shareholder agreement and is in compliance with our Environmental and Social safeguards standards.
- Monitor the payments of fees and the receipt of income/dividends from equity investment and equity divestment.
- Monitor PSOD’s portfolio in terms of composition, size, quality, concentration risk, diversification, credit quality migration, valuation movements, and other criteria.
- Ensure quality and consistency of reports and outgoing communications related to portfolio management.
- Compare exit alternatives and executing approved exit strategies to return cash to ADB
- Identify emerging risks and project implementation problems and leading the identification of action plans to mitigate against such risks such as restructuring, or workout activities.
- Oversee financial health and development impact of the portfolio , conduct periodic reviews, ensure compliance with ADB’s standards and with Environmental and Social Safeguards standards and that all key issues are considered and ADB’s strategic objectives are delivered.
Strategy and Planning
- Leading, supervising and participating in several initiatives and change projects.
Knowledge Center for Governance, Risk Advisory, and Development Impact
- Lead and oversee the coordination and expansion of existing and future programs introducing international best practices at investee companies with regard to corporate governance, risk management, internal controls, and other initiatives.
- Measure expected development, environmental and social safeguard outcomes in existing and proposed interventions in close liaison with the Private Sector Transaction Support team (PSTS); and
- Lead and managing the portfolio review, credit reviews and extended annual review reports (XARRs) of the portfolio.
External Liaison and Knowledge Sharing
- Facilitate active relationships with financial intermediaries in the region, institutional investors, and other commercial partners.
- Analyze and report on market and investment trends.
Staff Supervision
- Create and lead multidisciplinary teams and ensure the overall quality of work.
- Supervise the performance of teams and individuals providing clear direction and regular monitoring and feedback on performance; and
- Provide coaching and mentoring to team and individuals and ensure their ongoing learning and development.
Qualifications
Relevant Experience & Requirements
- Master’s Degree, or equivalent, in Business Administration, Finance, or related fields; or University degree in Business Administration, Finance, or related fields and at least 5 years specialized experience relevant to the position can be considered
- At least 10 years of combined professional financial and emerging markets experience in the private sector with remarkable work in project processing, administration of private sector projects covering capital markets, financial institutions, corporate finance, project finance, privatization, financial structuring etc.
- An understanding of how to conduct advanced valuation analysis in respect of project & corporate finance transactions, financial institutions, and private equity investments. In addition, it is essential that they have a deep understanding and appreciation of equity markets and products.
- Strong risk management expertise, covering the different risk categories (market risk, credit risk, operational risk), etc.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of equity, loan, and related products, including pricing, servicing, accounting, exiting, etc. and with particular experience in developing markets
- Ability to lead negotiations with investee companies, borrowers, fund managers, existing and prospective shareholders, sponsors, and co-investors
- Experience in dealing with distressed assets is an advantage
- Strong analytical and structuring capabilities
- Proven leadership qualities and interpersonal skills
- Supervisory and team management skills are essential, along with the ability to drive a high-performance culture and lead by example
- Experience in managing a team with diverse interdisciplinary skills
- Ability to multitask is essential
- There will be frequent travel to developing member countries (DMCs)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, in particular strong ability in business writing
- International experience working in development in several countries

The selected candidate, if new to ADB, is appointed for an initial term of 3 years.
