Senior Journalist, Riga Special Reporters team

BBC News Russian is one of the largest of the BBC’s language services, providing non-stop multimedia content on BBC platforms and social media across the world.  Our output adheres to BBC’s values of accuracy and impartiality, free from commercial, political and religious affiliations or pressures.    

We are hiring a Russian fluent Senior Journalists Special Correspondent to join our BBC Riga Bureau.  

Main Responsibilities

This role will be based in the BBC Russian Riga bureau Special Reporters team where you will be responsible for originating and producing stories which may include scripting, editing, outputting, filming and presenting content across a range of BBC output.   You will deliver journalism of the highest standard and within the required timeframe using available resources and:

• Act as a facilitator of change, clearly communicating and distributing best practices between teams.
• Deliver to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
• Carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.
• Commission and select relevant materials ensuring they meet expectations of our audiences and adhere to the BBC’s editorial guidelines.
• May be required to undertake on-air reporting, film and edit material for broadcast where appropriate.
• May include the production and presentation of live or recorded programmes.
• May be required to present live or recorded content on radio, TV or online.
• As required, allocate work to a team and check progress; ensure the professional contribution of staff and the quality of output.
• Seek ways to increase diversity in our workforce and to ensure that our output reflects the audiences we serve.

Are you the right candidate?

The ideal candidate will be an experienced investigative journalist with a strong track record in finding, researching and delivering high-impact stories about Russia and neighbouring states across a range of platforms.   You will:

• Demonstrate proven experience of originating and implementing bold and original ideas and exercising sound judgement
• An excellent story-teller and strong and creative writer
• Have an understanding of video and social media be ready to take part in podcаsts, collaborate with video teams, and work on content for social media in order to tell stories and reach audiences across a wider range of BBC Russian platforms.
• Have an excellent knowledge and command of OSINT skills and practices and a proven track-record of using them.
• Serve as an on-the-day reporter and/or text editor whenever required.
• Collaborate with teams across the BBC in conducting investigations for a global audience
• Understand and uphold the values of the BBC
• Strictly adhere to the operational procedures and editorial processes of both the BBC Russian Service and BBC Languages.
• Have excellent people skills, resilience, ability to communicate effectively at different levels
• Have first-class Russian language skills and a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English
• Show self-reliance and an ability to follow through and deliver
• Have a strong awareness of health and safety and high-risk issues, especially relating to investigative journalism
• Readiness to be deployed at short notice, and ideally when needed to hostile environments
