Overview
The School of Science has a strong track record of excellence in teaching and research in Mathematics, Data Science Bioinformatics, Chemistry, Physics, Conservation Biology, Marine Biology, Environmental Management, Horticulture and Sustainability. We offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and have active research programs across all disciplines. Based at both Joondalup and Bunbury campuses of ECU, the School of Science aims to maintain teaching and research excellence through recruitment of new staff.

We have an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that provides technical instruction and support for undergraduate classes and associated services for teaching and/or research programs. 

Key Criteria
You will ensure the efficient and effective delivery of laboratory classes. This includes preparation of laboratory material, maintenance of equipment for undergraduate classes, ordering consumables and equipment, and planning and testing of experiments before practical classes commence.

Your responsibilities will include providing technical support to research programs, high-end analytical instruments, and the day-to-day requirements of the laboratory.

An understanding of ECU Work, Health, and Safety (WHS) systems will be highly regarded, including experience in the development of Risk assessments and Standard Operating Procedures.  You will play an important role in ensuring that ECU’s WHS procedures and policies are adhered to, as you will need to ensure that staff/students are working in a safe and compliant manner.

Knowledge of WHS regulations and specific statutory requirements in a laboratory setting is required.

No two days are the same; this is an active and engaging role where you will be able to put your strong problem-solving skills to the test.

Capacities
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person and have:

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline or an equivalent level of experience.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills with proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team as well as independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate a strong WHS awareness with an ability to safely handle hazardous substances and biological materials.
  • Demonstrate oral communication skills with the ability to interact effectively and professionally with staff, students, and clients at all levels. As well as the ability to effectively communicate information and provide instruction to others including re-enforcing ECU’s WHS policies and ensuring students always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Demonstrate technical skills and experience in preparing for laboratory sessions and maintaining equipment particularly associated with biology and chemistry.
  • Demonstrate your ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines and report writing.
  • Demonstrate an advanced knowledge in the use and maintenance of scientific instrumentation including LC/MS, GC/MS, ICP/MS

The School has a large range of analytical equipment that you will need to operate.  On the job and external training will be provided as part of your professional development, although demonstrating prior experience working with analytical instruments (such as IC, GC FID, LC DAD/FLD, IC, TOC analyser, FIA) would be highly advantageous.

Benefits & Remuneration
This full-time ongoing position attracts remuneration of $88,973 – $95,993 PA (HEW6), plus 17% University superannuation contribution.
