Are you an experienced Senior Lawyer, who has provided high level legal and policy advice in a timely and efficient manner.

The Australian Human Rights Commission is based in the heart of Sydney CBD, with flexible hybrid and remote work options available.

This full-time, ongoing position has a competitive salary ranging from $111,649 to $124,836 per annum, plus 15.4% superannuation.

About the Team

The Legal Division is a small, dynamic team that provides the services of in-house counsel to the Commission. Our lawyers give high level legal advice on a range of issues including human rights, privacy and anti-discrimination law, and commercial issues such as contracts and tender processes. We also represent the Commission in external litigation, including as intervener in human rights and unlawful discrimination proceedings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research and prepare high level legal and related policy advice on matters including human rights, privacy and federal discrimination law.
  • Prepare and conduct (and assist other lawyers in the preparation and conduct of) external litigation including Commission interventions and responses to Administrative Decisions (Judicial Review) Act applications.
  • Assist in the efficient and timely conduct of Commission inquiries into alleged breaches of human rights and discrimination in employment under the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986, including preparing reports to the Attorney-General in relation to such inquiries.
  • Provide advice in relation to commercial arrangements the Commission enters into, including settling contracts and partnership agreements and advising on tender processes.
  • Assist in the timely processing of and/or make decisions concerning Freedom of Information Act applications.
  • Represent the Commission at meetings, seminars and in court as required.
  • Work effectively with other sections within the Commission and liaise with persons having contact with the Commission.
  • Maintain standards for timeliness, confidentiality and matter management.
