Senior Lead Analyst – Europe in the World

Position description

The European Policy Centre (EPC) is looking for a Senior Lead Analyst to head the EPC’s global activities and analysis. The successful candidate will be the Head of the Europe in the World (EiW) Programme and is expected to be at Associate Director level, with flexibility depending on the level of applicant.

As part of this position, it is expected that the candidate can provide thought leadership on international affairs and the European Union’s global role. The position will involve representation of the EPC at the highest level, including in international fora. Inter alia, this includes involvement in ongoing projects on EU-China think tank exchanges, supporting Ukraine, economic security, enlargement, security/defence and transatlantic relations.

The successful candidate will preferably be predominantly based in Brussels, although we will consider applicants who need more flexible arrangements. She/he/they are expected to provide thought leadership in the programmes topics, develop and acquire funding for projects and lead the EPC’s work on their cross-cutting policy area; including managing the analysts working on relevant projects and coordinating activities across EPC programmes.

The successful candidate will be part of the EPC Management Team. The Management Team works with the Chief Executive, the Deputy Chief Executive, and the Chief Operating Officer to set and implement the strategic direction of the EPC.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to:

• Work closely with the CEO, the D-CEO and the COO to support the development and implementation of the strategic vision of the EPC, taking an active role in organisational development;
• Provide strategic though leadership, with a high profile among European and global policymakers and represent the EPC in international fora and strategically important events.

The successful candidate will be required to:

• Elaboration and implementation of the programme’s activity plan mainly on Europe’s geopolitical place in the world, neighbourhood policies, defence and enlargement;
• Manage the programme team, provide overall coordination of the programme and its finances;
• Coordinate the work of the EiW team with other programmes and identify cross-cutting opportunities for impact;
• Identify and pursue programme funding opportunities;
• Peer review of EPC publications in their programme area, together with the Chief Executive and the Director of Studies.

Candidates should have a solid, policy-relevant, academic & analytical background with the following profile:

• experience of senior level think tank or policy leadership including international representation at the highest levels;
• university degree in a relevant subject and post-graduate specialism;
• a minimum of 10 years’ experience in policy analysis in the above policy areas, with think tank and/or policy experience an important asset;
• proven capacity in writing, publishing and presenting thought leadership at the highest level, including experience in enriching and leading policy debates;
• proven experience in engaging with the media, including an active presence on social media:
• ability to engage and network with institutions, experts and interested stakeholders, within the EU and globally;
• ability to work independently, as well as in multi-disciplinary team;
• a thorough expertise on EU and international institutions, global political actors and of past and current developments in relevant EU and global policy areas;
• proven ability to fundraise and manage strategic projects;
• experience in managing (multinational) teams;
• excellent communication skills (oral and written) and ability to network;
• dynamic, flexible, reliable and attentive to detail;
• fluent in English; fluency in at least one other major European language is desirable.
