Position description

With campuses in Washington, DC, Bologna, Italy and Nanjing, China, The Paul H. Nitze School of International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) has been educating global leaders for more than 70 years. As a highly selective graduate institution with a distinguished faculty, SAIS consistently ranks as one of the top schools of international relations in the world. SAIS was founded to provide a practical approach to training students in international affairs and foreign relations, and to provide mid-career educational opportunities for those already working in related fields.

SAIS invites applications for a term faculty appointment at the level of Senior Lecturer with specialization in security, strategy, and statecraft.

The faculty member will teach three to six courses annually with one being a capstone. The Senior Lecturer will support activities and programs within other JHU Centers and Institutes such as the Foreign Policy Institute (FPI), Henry Kissinger Center and the Merrill Center. Additional SAIS service requirements for the JHU and SAIS community are required.

The starting course load is six courses per academic year. The candidate would be expected to have teaching experience in the following areas:

  • Strategy and Policy
  • National Defense and Military Strategy
  • Security Cooperation
  • Military Lessons (including Iraq and Afghanistan)
  • Security in the Middle East
  • Civil-Military Relations
  • The Impact of War
  • World Order and Disorder
  • Regional Areas

Course reductions, from the starting course load of six, will be negotiated based on additional non-teaching duties.

Qualifications

Candidates are expected to have at least ten years of experience working in a related field. They must have a demonstrated record of achievement teaching in political science, geopolitics, and/or international relations fields that focus on security, strategy, and statecraft to apply. Candidates should bring experience from the private sector, the government, and academia. They must also have experience in policy-oriented research and publications.

Rank will be dependent on experience. The appointment is a full-time, non-tenure track, renewable 12-month term position and will commence in the fall 2024 semester.

Preference will be given to candidates who have expertise related to experiential learning and the application of engaged teaching methods.
