PURPOSE

Amnesty International Secretariat (IS) seeks a Senior Legal Counsel Consultant for a four-month consultancy to provide expert legal guidance and manage legal risks for our global operations. This short-term consultancy is designed to support the legal team during a period of high workload, addressing complex legal challenges and ensuring compliance across Amnesty’s initiatives.

Location: Home-based in the UK, with occasional visits to our London office as required.

Duration: 4 months (60 working days)

Rate: £340 per day (sitting outside of IR35).

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible.

OBJECTIVES AND DELIVERABLES

The Senior Legal Counsel Consultant will focus on the following key areas:

  • High-Risk Publications Review: Oversee and advise on defamation and other legal risks in Amnesty’s publications. Provide training for research and editorial staff on legal risk management.
  • Crisis Management: Deliver legal counsel during organisational or reputational crises to protect Amnesty’s interests.
  • Disputes & Litigation: Manage all legal disputes and legal actions involving Amnesty International Secretariat. Protect our operational and reputational interests through effective litigation and dispute resolution.
  • Contract Review: Review all major contracts to be entered into by the IS and supervise the contract review process by Procurement and Contracts team. Assist with the drafting of global and local contracts and policies as required.
  • Intellectual Property Protection: Oversee the management of Amnesty’s intellectual property, including brand assets and copyright materials. Ensure compliance with trademark and licensing agreements.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualified solicitor or barrister (English law) with significant post-qualification experience.
  • Extensive post-qualification experience in a professional law firm or in an in-house capacity in two or more areas directly relevant to this role, for example media law, corporate legal governance, intellectual property
  • Proven experience providing complex legal advice at board and senior management levels.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convey legal information clearly to non-specialists.
  • Ability to manage tasks independently, prioritise effectively, and meet agreed deadlines.
  • Experience in working within an international, complex organisational structure.
  • Fluent English, written and spoken essential, additional language skills desirable
