We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago
for a Senior Manager Operations on our
Publishing Operations team. This is a hybrid position reporting
into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 2 days a week in the
office.

As a Senior Manager Operations, you will manage
publishing operations, process improvement, and business operations
planning across Publishing with routine collaboration with the
Editorial Group. This role will be responsible for operationalizing
the strategic plan, developing plans for prioritization and
communication on projects, managing the overall planning on project
and resource needs, and overseeing Publishing administrative
operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Publishing Operations

  • Develop and streamline operational processes that facilitate
    the management of the business; ensure processes are well defined,
    properly documented, accessible and up to date.
  • Operationalize the strategic planning framework for the
    Publishing group, creating and maintaining a process for consistent
    and routine evaluation of progress toward goals and changes in
    external and internal environments that could impact progress.
  • Ensure successful communication, collaboration, and workflow
    for resource planning for new and existing initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Director to explore new opportunities and
    scenarios ensuring a robust review of rationale, costs, risks, and
    opportunities.
  • Create business plans for new initiatives outlining rationale,
    costs, risks, and opportunities.
  • Develop and manage new processes, and procedures, to ensure
    timeliness, accuracy, and cross-BU collaboration of workflow.
  • Oversee Publishing operations processes such as performance
    planning, goal updates, IT requirements, and onboarding new
    staff.
  • Develop analyses reports and present to leadership to provide
    guidance on above operations processes.
  • Collaborate with Director and Publisher on business planning,
    highlighting risks and making recommendations and/or decisions to
    drive operational efficiencies, and business optimization,
  • Oversee publishing administrative operations; ensure effective
    and efficient administrative support in Publishing.

Project & Process Improvement Planning

  • Manage and maintain an ongoing process for forward-looking
    planning (12-24 month) on potential projects and resource needs and
    develop a process for prioritization and communication of project
    resources.
  • Manage the overall prioritization of project management
    resources to support the goals of Publishing, in coordination with
    JAMA Network Editorial and Director.
  • Lead the development of a framework and capabilities around
    continuous internal improvement across the Publishing
    verticals.
  • Manage vendor relationships, including selection for quality
    and cost, negotiation; ensures vendors meet contract
    obligations.

Staff Management and Engagement

  • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for professional
    staff, responsible for setting objectives, evaluating performance,
    and developing staff.
  • Collaborate with Director to build a strong Publishing Team
    focusing on team culture, pipeline development, and embedding
    Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives into the team.

assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree a plus (eg, MBA or
    PMP Certification).
  • Minimum 7+ years of demonstrated experience in Publishing
    across multiple functions within an organization. Must be able to
    constructively coordinate discussion and input among high level
    executives across various discrete business units to develop
    prioritization plans.
  • Minimum 3+ years’ experience with staff management; ability
    lead and mentor talent; demonstrated ability to build, lead and
    motivate teams.
  • Proven experience translating organizational objectives into
    programs and projects which can then be communicated and
    prioritized across diverse teams. Must be comfortable with a
    high level of uncertainty and ambiguity in the initial discovery
    and planning stages with the ability to focus and drive a project
    to completion.
  • Proven experience with implementing process improvement within
    an organization.
  • Experience in a fast-paced publishing environment and knowledge
    of publishing technology industry trends, standards, and
    competition a plus.
  • Prior experience allocating and managing resources across
    projects and communicating and evaluating project risks as
    needed.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    essential.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills required.
  • Must have highly proficient interpersonal skills and the
    ability to interact with others at all levels.
