Salary: $125,000 – $145,000 depending on organizational equity, experience, and qualifications.
BCI and our Mission
Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, is seeking a Senior (Sr.) Marketing and Communications Director to join BCI’s Team. BCI is a distributed organization with staff across the United States. The Sr. Marketing and Communications Director can live anywhere and will work remotely.
The Sr. Marketing and Communications Director will join a dynamic organization and a highly progressive team of conservation and communications professionals and will report directly to the Chief Growth Officer, who is a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The Sr. Marketing and Communications Director will manage the Marketing and Communications team and design and implement effective marketing and communications strategies that build brand awareness and drive membership, revenue, and action. The Sr. Marketing and Communications Director must be highly collaborative and enjoy working within a mission- and results-driven environment where they will contribute to positive ecological and social change. This position is ideal for an individual committed to conservation with interest and experience in communications and marketing for a global organization.
Position Description:
The Sr. Marketing and Communications Director will be responsible for planning, development, and implementation of all BCI’s marketing strategies, communications, and public relations activities, both external and internal. They will direct the efforts of the marketing and communications staff and coordinate at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functions of BCI; connect marketing activity to organizational and fundraising goals; and oversee major marketing campaigns. This is a leader/doer role, with the Sr. Marketing and Communications Director maintaining their own portfolio of work while also leading the team. Most notably, the person in this role will:
- Lead the three-person Marketing and Communications team and a cadre of vendors to drive a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that supports the strategic and fundraising goals of the organization.
- Lead organizational efforts to build, engage and manage a marketing-driven donor pipeline, deploying effective strategies to recruit new supporters, effectively engage constituents, and convert supporters to member and donor.
- Lead data gathering, analysis and reporting related to BCI’s members and supporters, and manage to achieve key performance indicators related to recruitment, engagement, and conversion.
- Design and implement the strategic communications plan and annual calendar, incorporating clearly defined goals and defining the audiences and tactics across programs and appropriately timed campaigns.
- Lead efforts that convey the BCI’s full impact, ecological and socioeconomic, in tangible ways to new audiences, such as international institutions, global funders, and more mainstream audiences.
- Ensure BCI’s marketing presence and practices foster trust with local communities, indigenous peoples, and more diverse audiences.
- Collaborate with the Director of Institutional Engagement and Development team in the creation and implementation of cause-related marketing campaigns with well-aligned corporate and business partners.
- Provide leadership and support for building relationships and expanding the community through creative community engagement programming, including Bat Walks, Gardening for Bats, Backyard Bat Surveys, and other community engagement approaches.
- Identify key audience types/targets and develop effective evaluations/metrics for individual programs and campaigns.
- Employ the latest digital communications strategies to increase outreach and brand recognition and develop an integrated social media and digital strategy to drive brand awareness, increase conversion rates, and increase donor giving.
- Engage with key internal stakeholders to promote integrated, strategic marketing plans and develop content that advances organizational goals.
- Oversee external public and media relations strategies that optimize the positioning of BCI in the global conservation space using owned, earned, and paid media.
- Ensure organization leadership and staff have the tools to seamlessly represent the BCI brand.
- Proactively seek to improve external communication and brand representation of all kinds, including developing talking points, meeting materials, presentations, etc.
- Direct the selection of services provided by outside vendors as they relate to communications, media generation, graphic design, and branding.
- Manage development, distribution, and tracking/analyzing of communications and marketing activity (press releases, top posts, appeal emails, conversion of online gifts, email sign-ups) and social channels (Twitter/X, Facebook Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok) toward increases in membership and donation results.
- Foster relationships with key partners and stakeholders to enhance our communications and outreach strategies.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Required Knowledge/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred in the areas of communications and marketing-related fields (e.g., marketing, business administration, management, advertising, journalism, and/or communications).
- At least ten years of professional experience, including leading the communications, marketing, social media, and public relations activities of a high-growth global organization with multiple programs, services, or products.
- Genuine and enthusiastic interest in Bat Conservation International’s mission to protect bat species and habitats to ensure a healthy planet.
- Deep interest in Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, with demonstrated ability to effectively lead and manage inclusive teams and drive marketing efforts that appropriately position inclusive, global conservation.
- Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the design and execution of marketing and communications activities in support of membership, email acquisition, and donations to the organization.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and story-telling skills.
- High competence in Google Analytics and other performance measurements, approaches, and platforms.
- Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work proactively and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Experience overseeing the design and production of email and print materials and publications, website management, digital/social media content creation and management, and public relations that drive revenue and growth.
- Strong budgeting and cost-management skills and ability to maximize impact with a limited budget.
- Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team of marketing and communications specialists.
- Experience working with media outlets and handling crisis communications.
- Possess high energy, emotional intelligence and leadership skills, enabling the ability to unify teams and effectively drive communications at both strategic and tactical level
- Experience overseeing the design and production of online and print collateral and publications.
- Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
- Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people and systems.
- Flexible and a self-starter; able to manage multiple concurrent projects while also being highly detail-oriented with attention to quality.
- Interest in engaging with different communities, global society issues. and developing opportunities that encourage and grow a diverse, equitable, and inclusive conservation community.

Compensation and Benefits
- $125,000 – $145,000 annually, depending on organizational equity, experience, and qualifications; full-time salaried. Paid biweekly electronically or via check.
