The Smith Family is a children’s education charity that helps young Australians experiencing disadvantage to create better futures for themselves through harnessing the power of education.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Media Advisor to join our family. Reporting to the Strategic Communications Specialist and working alongside dedicated, energised, and passionate team members, this role will be an integral part of a high-performing team working to develop content that delivers regular publicity for The Smith Family across print, broadcast, online and social media channels, which enhances The Smith Family’s visibility to its range of stakeholders, accurately promotes its views and thought leadership, and increases general awareness about its work and the value it delivers.

About our role

You will be responsible for:

  • Writing media releases, pitches, talking points, articles, opinion pieces, blogs, profiles, case studies, newsletters, letters to the editor and speeches
  • Working closely with relevant journalists to ensure a regular presence for TSF in the media, particularly in the thought leadership space, across all platforms
  • Working with journalists and other influencers to position The Smith Family as a “thought leader” and advocate for children and families experiencing disadvantage
  • Working with The Smith Family’s Learning for Life teams and students and families supported by the organisation to accurately capture and share their stories
  • Liaising with General Managers, Regional Program Managers, Learning for Life team members and students and families supported through The Smith Family, on story telling for media initiatives that support the organisation’s media strategy
  • Working closely with our Ambassadors to engage and support them as they represent The Smith Family and contribute to our work

About you

As well as passion for community, you will bring the following:

  • Degree qualification in journalism, communications, PR, media relations and/or marketing or 5 plus years’ co-ordinating communications, PR, media relations or marketing activity with proven results
  • 5+ years of journalism, communications, PR, media relations or marketing experience
  • Existing media contacts with influential journalists/news organisations
  • Demonstrated writing skills
  • Experience in media operations and an understanding of the media’s needs
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully pitch stories to the media and have them published/broadcast
  • Proven ability to develop and execute plans which meet objectives and deliver business results
  • Have or willing to obtain an employee Working With Children’s Check
