JOB SUMMARY

 

The Senior National Protection Officer role is to implement civilian protection and violence-prevention programming for those affected by violent conflict in Iraq. The position’s objectives and responsibilities build upon the responsibilities of the National Protection Officer position. The following objectives and responsibilities are in addition to the responsibilities of the National Protection Officer. However, this is not a management position. The Senior National Protection Officer does not have any line management or supervision authority over any member of a field team. The position should also provide support and coaching to colleagues. Directly assigning tasks is outside the confines of this role except when acting as the “Officer in Charge” in coordination with the Team Leader.

  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Specific to the SNPO Position (all other NPO responsibilities still apply):

Know and understand the NP mission, vision, and values and actively commit to upholding and advocating for them both inside and outside of working hours.

  • Serve as a team and community role model for nonviolence, peaceful co-existence and social cohesion, and always maintain a positive image of the organization in the community
  • Be available for emergencies in the areas if program implementation

Project Implementation / Programming

  • Technical
    • Design training and facilitation guides based upon existing materials or creating new training materials for capacity enhancement of the community members or internally within the team
    • Facilitate capacity enhancement workshops and training within the team and onboarding sessions with new staff
    • Proactively participate and support the Team Leader in strategic planning sessions.
    • Together with the Team Leader and the rest of the team provide contextually grounded analysis and technical expertise on the practical implementation of Unarmed Civilian Protection in the project site
    • Lead the design of concrete strategies with community members for preventing violence against civilians and building peace
    • Develop new and innovative programming ideas drawn from lessons learned in the field and shares them with the Team Leader
    • Provide on the job mentoring for colleagues in Unarmed Civilian Protection and its competencies.
    • Provide support to colleagues to build foundational capacities such as computer, technology, Word, and Excel skills
    •  Actively identify entry points to enhance impact, relationships with community and other stakeholders and expand the team’s community engagement
  • Reporting, information gathering, and contextual analysis
    • Assist the Team Leader and International Protection Officers in the preparation of weekly reports
    • Produce English and Arabic context, conflict, and impact reports
  • Translation
    • Assist with written translation of materials
    • Provide oral translation during workshops and meetings

Administration & Operations

  • Security
    • Contribute to group security assessments and security decision making
    • Ensure all project work is consistent with agreed safety and security policies and procedures
  • Logistics/Finance. In the absence of the FPO
    • Assist with procurement of supplies or other logistical matters. Handle operational funds in compliance with financial procedures; account for team cash managed by finance focal person

Other 

  • Perform any other work-related duties that may be assigned by the Team Leader

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education, Knowledge and Experience

 

Required

  • Strong written and spoken English
  • At least one year of experience as an NPO with strong exceptional performance
  • Deep understanding and practice of NP values with the team and the community.

 

Has Demonstrated four of the following six requirements

  • Has demonstrated the ability to develop facilitation and training materials from multiple sources and to take the lead in developing materials with colleagues
  • Has demonstrated strong facilitation skills
  • Has demonstrated strong analysis skills regarding context and conflict and impact analysis
  • Has demonstrated strong understanding of foundational concepts related to UCP strategies and NPs methodology
  • Has demonstrated strong understanding of the causes and contributing factors to multiple forms of violence and the opportunities for effective violence prevention and de-escalation
  • Has demonstrated the ability to mentor and support colleagues in cooperative manner in all technical and non-technical areas

Other Specialized Requirements

  • This position is open to nationals of Iraq in the specific field team only.

Working Conditions: 

  • This field position may include challenging living conditions, limited access to amenities, and potentially unstable security situations. 
  • You must be prepared to live in basic or non-traditional accommodation, which may include shared housing, camps, or field-based settings. 
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to strict security protocols.
