JOB SUMMARY 
Under the direct supervision of the Director, the Senior Park Ranger will train, outfit, schedule and supervise the part-time Park Ranger staff to help ensure safe and appropriate use of park and recreation facilities.  This position will serve as a field customer service officer, assign and schedule patrol areas, ensure policies are enforced and assist emergency agencies responding to the park.  Senior Park Ranger will also perform all related duties as required.  This position requires late night hours, weekend and holiday work.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

  • Hire, train, outfit, schedule and supervise all Dorchester County Parks and Recreation Part-Time Park Rangers.
  • Ensures that all Dorchester County Park and Recreation parks, boat landings, undeveloped properties, trails and greenways are secured, safe and have a ranger presence.  
  • Submit written reports to include but not limited to: Activity Logs, Training Logs and Incident Reports. 
  • Notify the appropriate personnel or agency upon discovery of an unusual or unauthorized event or activity. Assists law enforcement as requested.  
  • Acts as a representative of the County, interacting and communicating with patrons to provide information about park amenities, rules, events, and programming being offered.  
  • Courteously respond to visitor’s complaints and suggestions and communicate them to the Director or designated staff.  
  • Works closely with park management to ensure that programs, high traffic dates, and special park events have proper Ranger coverage. 
  • Responds to and takes appropriate action and care in emergency or unusual situations. Completes required reporting of all incidents and notifies proper authorities as necessary. 
  • Conduct periodic patrols of facilities at night for unauthorized use of the park and it’s facilities.  
  • Operates a personal computer and other general office equipment as necessary. 
  • Adhere to all departmental administrative procedures as required per the departmental operations and procedures manual. 
  • Attend departmental meetings, training sessions, including driver safety classes or other sessions or meetings as may be required by the Director.  
  • Attends Dorchester County sponsored special events and ensures patrons enjoy the events within Park and Recreation Department Rules and Regulations. 
  • Complies with County policies and Parks Department regulations and procedures. 
  • Attends trainings to maintain certifications as required. 
  • Occasionally picks up litter or pulls a full trashcan when needed. 
  • Be available to assist the County and the EMA team if asked and called upon as it relates to County declared emergencies or weather-related events.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED 
  • Requires at least two (4) years of related work experience.Additional RequirementsSpecial Qualifications: 
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Class III Advanced Law Enforcement Certification through the SCCJA within one year of entering position.
  • Completion and maintenance of CPR, AED and 1st Aide certifications is preferred.
