Azura is seeking a Senior Passive Acoustic Researcher with experience in cetacean acoustics to support the Protected Species Division of the NOAA Fisheries Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC).

Background

The applicant will need to be an independent worker and have extensive experience organizing and conducting passive acoustic deployments and passive acoustic analyses.

Place of Performance and Work Schedule

Work is expected to be performed at the NEFSC lab in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Work is full-time (40 hours per week, Monday through Friday) and expected to last approximately two years with the possibility of an extension. During workdays, candidates must be able to respond to all communications within 24 hours and conduct calls and meetings as necessary during normal business hours. Travel will be required (3+ trips / year). This position is not open to visa sponsorship or relocation assistance.

Duties

  • Coordinate and oversee passive acoustic field work. This includes planning, ordering supplies, staffing, and discussions with vessel operator and passive acoustics team during field deployments.
  • Conduct passive acoustic project planning, data analysis, statistical analysis, report and scientific manuscript production, and presentations at relevant conferences/meetings. This includes experience with both archival and real time data sets for all cetacean species (baleen whales and odontocetes).

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in a relevant field of study
  • Multiple years of passive acoustic research experience including extensive experience leading passive acoustic field work
  • Experience publishing research papers
  • Experience delivering many conference presentations
  • Extensive experience running soundscape and marine mammal analysis
  • Excellent reading comprehension and scientific writing skills
  • Ability to multitask and work with short deadlines
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain a Public Trust Clearance which requires passing a thorough background check.

  • Experience working with long-term acoustic data sets
