Senior Peace Education and Advocacy Associate, International Affairs

Position description

This position communicates a biblical commitment to peace and non-violence at systemic levels to MCC constituent churches and U.S. policymakers. Focus areas include peacebuilding and foreign assistance with a particular focus on Nigeria and DR Congo. In collaboration with MCC international program staff and church-based partners, the position educates U.S. policymakers on effective peacebuilding and humanitarian assistance strategies and advocates for constructive policies consistent with Anabaptist principles. In consultation with the domestic Peace Education Coordinator and regional staff, the position educates constituent churches and schools on peacebuilding methods and creates tools for biblical and theological reflection from an Anabaptist perspective, encouraging advocacy for systemic change. The position will serve as MCC U.S. National Peace & Justice Ministries liaison to Eastern Mennonite University and Eastern Mennonite School. The position includes networking, speaking, research, analysis and writing responsibilities.

Qualifications

This position is available on a salaried basis. Legal eligibility to be employed in the U.S. is required.

Other major(s) and/or fields(s) of study required:
Master’s Degree in international development, international affairs, peace studies, political science, theology, history, or related field

Key Responsibilities

Issue focus areas: Foreign assistance – 50%, Nigeria – 25%, DR Congo – 25%; with a focus on peacebuilding, food security and psychosocial support.

Methods: Education – 35% Communicate a biblical commitment to peace to churches, schools, and policymakers through seminars, speaking engagements, articles and worship resources. Networking – 30% Collaborate with MCC staff in the U.S. and globally, schools, and faith-based organizations and coalitions. Advocacy – 35% Research, monitor and analyze U.S. foreign policy and advocate for constructive policies consistent with Anabaptist principles through meetings and public communication.

Travel expectations: Up to 25% with less than 30 nights away per year. Travel includes visiting churches, universities, and other Anabaptist groups inside the U.S.; regular travel to Nigeria and DR Congo; and occasional travel to other MCC program locations globally and MCC offices nationally.
