The National Mental Health Commission (the Commission) provides expert advice to the Australian Government on Australia’s mental health and suicide prevention system, including through undertaking system performance monitoring and reporting, engaging with consumers of mental health and suicide prevention services and their carers, and leading a national whole-of- governments approach to suicide prevention.

THE TEAM
We are recruiting multiple APS6 roles to work on projects within the Commission’s Policy Team, which focuses on three major work areas:
- Strategic Projects – high level project development and delivery, relationship and stakeholder engagement;
- Strategy – contribution to strategic planning and development of work and business plans, including evaluation and reporting; and
- Policy – formulation of Commission responses, including for national social policy issues, parliamentary and other agency policies and strategies, and development of policy positions and advice to the executive.
The Commission is also progressing a number of internal organisational priorities around its functions, efficiency, culture and capability. This includes building organisational readiness for embedding lived experience principles and practices into the Commission’s way of working and work programs.
THE ROLE
The role of Senior Policy Officer requires conceptual, analytical and written communication skills. In addition, the role requires proven project management, stakeholder consultation and contract management skills, as well as strong written and verbal communication skills.
To be successful, a person in this role will be self-motivated, have a flexible work approach, be able to work effectively in distributed team arrangements across geographical locations, and want to gain wide ranging experience as part of a small agency.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Developing and maintaining relationships with a broad range of stakeholders and facilitating formal and ongoing engagement.
- Managing project administration and implementation to ensure the successful delivery of project outcomes within agreed timeframes.
- Planning, procuring and managing the effective and efficient conduct of projects, consultancies or contracts to support the development of reports, including working with the Engagement & Communications team on the publication process and release of reports.
- Undertaking analysis to inform submissions, monitoring and reporting, and understanding across a range of topics related to the mental health system.
- Preparation of high-level briefs, submissions, discussion papers, correspondence and presentations to support the information needs of the Executive and Commissioners.
- Provision of secretariat support function and events management.
- Working flexibly and effectively across projects and teams in the Commission, including input into policy and strategy work.
- Effective records and information management.
- Other duties as required.

- Knowledge of or capacity to develop quickly, an understanding of the complexity of Australia’s mental health and suicide prevention systems.
- Tertiary qualifications in mental health or other policy field and/or experience in mental health or social services sectors are desirable.
Remuneration
The positions are at the APS Level 6 with a salary of $95,190 plus 15.4 percent superannuation.
Tenure
The successful candidates will be considered for non-ongoing and ongoing employment. A merit list will be created for future ongoing and non-ongoing vacancies which become available within 18 months of advertising.
Eligibility
To be employed by the National Mental Health Commission applicants must be Australian Citizens or have permanent residency status pending the granting of Australian citizenship.
Location
Sydney is preferred, but Canberra and/or Melbourne may also be suitable. Flexible work and regular work-from-home arrangements are available.
