Senior Policy Officer – Nature Positive Business

Introduction 

This is a unique opportunity to join highly skilled and committed economics and policy team
working for nature positive improvements across the economy. You will lead the work on policy
that can help businesses reduce their impacts on nature and help deliver a critical aspect of
the change needed for the transition to a nature positive economy. This is an important role
that works across teams in the RSPB on a rapidly changing policy area.

What’s the role about? 

As a key member of the Nature Positive Economy team you will work across the team to develop
our position on key aspects of nature positive economic policy. You will be expected to
advocate for how business tools and metrics like the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial
Disclosures and financial reporting standards can be developed further and work together to
deliver business change. You will take over management of an internal project reviewing our
principles for and expectations of businesses that we partner with and be expected to
coordinate and facilitate discussion with RSPB colleagues on horizon scanning risks for the
organisation. 

Key aspects of the role: 

  • Developing effective policy positions/briefings based on sound evidence and understanding
    of the issues
  • Maintaining awareness and understanding of the development of business nature related
    initiatives
  • Working with colleagues in the Nature Positive Economy and Business Engagement teams to
    ensure coordination of our business facing work
  • Managing projects across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Developing and delivering effective advocacy strategies in conjunction with policy and
    advocacy colleagues
  • Undertaking advocacy and communicating persuasively to decision makers
  • Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders

Skills, knowledge and experience:

  • A good understanding of nature conservation and the initiatives for businesses to engage
    with it
  • A good understanding of governmental and political institutions across the UK and
    experience of delivering inciteful and impactful advocacy
  • Ability to analyse complex issues in a fast paced environment coupled with well-honed
    political acumen
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentational)
  • Effective negotiation and influencing skills
  • Strong time management and organisational skills
  • Demonstrable project management skills
  • Ability to act independently to lead on projects
  • Good team working skills

This is a Fixed-Term role for 12 months and 37.5 hours per week. 

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further
advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
