Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA’s nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA’s activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.
The Office of Safety and Security Coordination (NSOC) is located in the Office of the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department. Its mission is to ensure the technical consistency and effective coordination of the IAEA’s activities in the nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety and nuclear security programmes. NSOC comprises three Sections: the Programme and Strategy Coordination Section, the Networks Management and Partnership Section and the Safety Standards and Security Guidance Development Section.The Office of Safety and Security Coordination is located in the Office of the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department. The mission of the Programme and Strategy Coordination Section (PSCS) is to ensure the effective development and coordinated implementation of Major Programme 3 and to provide for a common strategic approach to cross cutting areas such as capacity building.
Main Purpose
Reporting to the Head of the Programme and Strategy Coordination Section, the Senior Safety Officer will develop and implement programme activities to strengthen coordination within and outside the Department and continuously improve the development, planning and monitoring of Major Programme 3.
Role
The Senior Safety Officer is: (1) an analyst, reviewing and analysing complex information from a broad range of sources and communicating concise, useful conclusions (2) a coordinator, leading the development of complex documents for the Agency’s policy making organs; (3) an expert, providing advice to senior managers on matters relating to nuclear safety and security, radiation protection and emergency preparedness and response; and (4) a scientific secretary/technical expert, planning and implementing complex meetings.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Coordinate the preparation of reports and documents for the policy making organs of the Agency;
Provide the Scientific Secretariat of the International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group (INSAG), including the planning and implementation of meetings and the development of INSAG publications;
Provide senior managers with an up-to-date comprehensive global overview of nuclear safety and security and with advice on planning, developing and implementing the activities of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security;
Advise on opportunities for coordination and cooperation with other Departments of the Agency, with the United Nations and other international organizations, to ensure strategic alignment of Departmental activities;
Collect and analyse information and prepare policy papers, official, briefs, speeches, presentations and position papers.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Master’s Degree – Advanced university degree, preferably in nuclear or other engineering sciences.
A minimum of ten years of experience in nuclear or radiation safety or security with extensive experience in reviewing, revising and drafting high-level scientific, technical and regulatory related texts.
Experience in an international multidisciplinary environment, with knowledge of the worldwide status and trends in nuclear and radiation safety.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $92731 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 42934*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks’ annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
