Organizational Setting
The Department of Safeguards carries out the IAEA’s duties and responsibilities as the world’s nuclear inspectorate, supporting global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. The primary role of the Department is to develop and implement IAEA safeguards to ensure that there is no diversion of declared nuclear material from peaceful activities and no indications of undeclared nuclear material or activities in a State as a whole.
The Department comprises nuclear safeguards inspectors, responsible for carrying out inspections and verifications of all-safeguards relevant information for nuclear facilities in over 180 States; and technical staff responsible for a wide range of activities including: developing concepts and approaches for implementing safeguards; developing and maintaining safeguards equipment; providing analytical and laboratory services for sample analysis; collecting, evaluating and analysing safeguards-relevant information; providing information and communication technology infrastructure and services; and providing programme coordination support.
The Office of Information and Communication Systems (SGIS) is responsible for the provision of secure Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services that enable the Department of Safeguards to deliver on its mandate. Major services provided by SGIS include provision of information technology project management services; development and maintenance of specialized ICT solutions; operation of resilient ICT infrastructure; provision of customer support services; and protection of safeguards information. In partnership with other organizational entities, SGIS is responsible for planning and implementing ICT strategies as well as promoting ICT standards.
Main Purpose
As a team member reporting to the Core Infrastructure Team Leader, the Senior Systems and Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the organization’s IT systems and infrastructure to ensure reliability, scalability, and security of server-based multi-forest environments. This role involves assessing current systems, proposing enhancements, and providing technical expertise to support business operations, and ensure the secure and reliable interactions among servers, workstations as well as various devices supporting the Safeguards IT infrastructure. To establish standards, policies and procedures for the efficient and secure operation of the Department’s computing and networking infrastructure.
Role
The Senior Systems and Infrastructure Engineer is: 1. a technical specialist, designing and implementing secure Windows based IT solutions; 2. a specialist adviser, providing advice to management on establishing secure IT systems and best practices; 3. a project manager, defining, planning and executing secure server infrastructure projects; and 4. a solution provider, functioning as an expert in troubleshooting Windows and other server hardware and software related issues and coordinating service delivery.
Functions / Key Results Expected
The Senior Systems and Infrastructure Engineer functions are: 1. Design, implement, document, maintain and automate IT systems and infrastructure, including servers, storage, and cloud services; 2. Lead and participate as a team member in infrastructure and application related projects; 3. Evaluate, test and document emerging technologies and trends to recommend innovative solutions that improve efficiency and effectiveness; 4. Provide technical guidance and support to management, team members and end-users; 5. Work closely with security coordinators and advisers to remediate security risks through technical and procedural endeavors; 6. Create, implement and document infrastructure change requests to maintain and update the core infrastructure Configuration Management Database (CMDB), while following formal change management procedures and ensuring data confidentiality, integrity and availability. 7. Act as a technical expert supporting procurement procedures for the acquisition of hardware, software, support, warranty, and consultation services related to core compute, storage and system infrastructure. Coordinate procurement activities related to the Department’s core compute, storage and system infrastructure, including maintenance, support and warranty.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
- Master’s Degree – Advanced University degree in fields related to information technology, computer science or related engineering field.
- Bachelor’s Degree – First level University degree in fields related to information technology, computer science or related engineering field plus two years of additional work experience may be considered in lieu of the Advance University degree.
- Minimum seven years of experience in the fields related to information technology, computer science or related engineering field.
- Advanced knowledge and expertise with the administration, configuration, deployment, and maintenance of Microsoft Exchange and e-mail services is an asset;
- Linux-based server administration is an asset;
- Knowledge of ITIL and service management frameworks;
- Knowledge of log management, search and analytics platforms, such as ELK, is an asset;
- Knowledge of and experience with cloud computing is an asset;
- Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $77326 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 44772, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks’ annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.
