Senior Wildlife Technician – Habitat

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) is currently recruiting for a Senior Wildlife Technician – Habitat opening at our Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) near Lewiston. 

The successful candidate will assist the Regional Wildlife Habitat Biologist implement wildlife habitat programs on the Craig Mountain WMA. Responsibilities include providing supervision to seasonal staff; planning and directing noxious weed control; assisting with habitat restoration, tree and shrub planting, and maintenance of food plots; working directly with private landowners and sportsman; using and maintaining tractors, ATVs, boats, power augers, and chainsaws; conducting plant and animal surveys; collecting data and managing electronic databases; assisting with report writing.

As a Senior Wildlife Technician – Habitat, your responsibilities may include: 

• Understanding and applying habitat management and restoration practices including seeding, planting, and noxious weed control.
• Participating in wildlife population surveys, including aerial surveys, interviewing hunters to obtain harvest data at check stations, surveying hunters’ opinions, maintaining survey and harvest databases, preparing preliminary reports and occasionally enforcing fish and game laws.
• Serving as an IDFG liaison to the public and other agencies concerning IDFG wildlife and habitat management programs.
• Using GIS to map animal location data and habitats and conduct simple spatial analyses.
• Assisting with radio-monitoring of wildlife.
• Maintain fences, roads, dikes, buildings, and grounds.
• Work and hike, with or without reasonable accommodation, in challenging and adverse terrain and weather conditions, including some long workdays, overnight stays, and weekend work.
• Safely use and maintain hand tools, power tools, 4WD vehicles, OHVs, farm equipment and heavy equipment.
• Manage day-to-day activities in the field and office including budgets, annual reports, maintenance of facilities, and responding to public inquiries.
• Supervises temporary staff and evaluates their performance.

Minimum Qualifications: (All qualifications listed below are required. To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the minimum experience and/or education standards as outlined in each of the typical qualification guidelines. A detailed resume or work history must be submitted, clearly demonstrating/supporting how you meet each requirement. This information is essential to our initial evaluation process. • Good knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements. (Typically gained by successful completion of college coursework in a wildlife related field equivalent to an associate degree and one year of experience in habitat maintenance or wildlife related work OR a bachelor’s degree in a wildlife related field with no experience outside coursework.)
• Good knowledge of habitat development practices and procedures. (Typically gained by successful completion of college coursework in wildlife habitat requirements OR two years of work experience equivalent to a wildlife technician position.)
• Experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing wildlife biological data. (Typically gained by successful completion of college-level math/biology courses; experience recording analyzing and summarizing biological data AND at least one college-level computer course or GIS course OR six months of experience manipulating data using a computer.)
• Valid driver’s license.

Minimum Qualification Specialty Areas: (The qualifications listed below are required for the current opening at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the minimum experience and/or education standards as outlined in each of the typical qualification guidelines.) 

• Some knowledge of supervisory practices. (Typically gained by successful completion of a class or seminar (of more than one day) specifically covering supervisory practices or the elements of supervision; OR completion of a college-level personnel related course covering supervisory practices; OR lead work experience that involved work assignment, direction, and monitoring of staff (such experience on a fill-in basis is non-qualifying unless for a period equivalent to a minimum of three months or more – they do not have to be consecutive months.))
