About the role:

SANE’s SEWB Counsellor is an identified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander role as part of a newly established SEWB team. The SEWB Team works cross-functionally to provide a range of support options within SANE’s drop in line and guided services and programs to provide an integrated, culturally safe and responsive service.

The position will be responsible for providing trauma informed, person centred and holistic, recovery oriented and culturally competent Telehealth and Online Support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with complex mental health who may be facing challenges in their lives which is impacting upon their social and emotional wellbeing, including to their family, friends and carers.

SANE believes that Social Emotional Wellbeing is a concept of health that involves connection to land or ‘country’, culture, spirituality, ancestry, family and community but also includes mental health.

This role can be based in either our Melbourne or Sydney offices. Hybrid work is available following your initial training and induction period – allowing employees flexibility in their work, but we do require onsite work as well.

In this role you will:

  • Work with people (primarily Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) impacted by complex mental health issues, complex trauma and psychological distress, and poor social emotional wellbeing, including families, friends and carers of people with complex mental health issues.
  • Provide single session counselling support via phone and webchat to people accessing SANE’s Support Line
  • Provide telephone based multi-session counselling guided by individualised Recovery Plans for participants of SANE’s Guided Recovery Service.
  • Utilise evidence-based interventions to promote mental health recovery, and improve social emotional wellbeing
  • Provide group facilitation and support the development and evaluation of SANE groups programs.
  • Consistently display and promote high level commitment, integrity, and diligence in all aspects of work and decision-making
  • Follow organisational safety, quality & risk policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe working environment for yourself, your colleagues, and members of the public.

What you will need to succeed in the role:

  • Registration with one of the following professional bodies: AHPRA-Psychology, PACFA–minimum provisional working toward full registration, ACA-minimum level 2, AASW/AMHSW–Full membership.
  • Tertiary qualification in psychology, social work, counselling.
  • A minimum of two years relevant mental health/SEWB work experience post qualification.
  • Extensive experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and/or communities
  • Identify as Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander descent*
