Duties and Responsibilities

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has over 140 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This consultancy position is located in the UNDRR Regional Office for Arab States. The consultant will work directly under the External Relations Officer in Cairo, Egypt. Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of External Relations Officer, Consultant will be responsible for:

Translate a limited set of web content from English to Arabic, including “microcopy” such as user interface text and menu items:

• Be mindful of aesthetic differences that RTL layout shift brings.
• Update landing pages with a diverse range of components and content needs.
• Be mindful of accessibility in web content.

Contribute and liaise with a web front end developer to ensure successful implementation of changes to support RTL languages, such as Arabic:

• Ensure an appropriate look is maintained.
• Working with a ticketing system (GitLab) to provide feedback and input
• Proactively flagging issues with RTL support and helping the team decide how RTL should be done.

Produce high quality content for ROAS communications and media channels including social media and digital portals.

• Identify opportunities for creating and delivering inspiring and attractive multimedia content about the work of ROAS.
• Advance ROAS social media channels and improve its reach, engagement, and positioning.
• Manage ROAS social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Youtube) content, posts and planed social media in both Arabic and English languages.

Provide valuable enhancement to the creation and/or delivery of communications activities and products such as written content, newsletters, case studies, and any other related work of ROAS communications.

• Strengthen ROAS media relations and press coordination.
• Ensure timely content development related to ROAS activities and covering various events conducted in the regions towards UNDRR Regional Platform.

5. Provide monthly report including a number of web articles translated in Arabic languages, social media statistics report, social media content plan as instructed by the External Relations Officer.

6. Any other tasks on communications/social media management required by the External Relations Officer.

Qualifications/special skills

• First-level university degree in journalism, communications, mass media, marketing, social sciences or related field is required.
• At least 5 years of experience in web content management, public information, digital communications, social media, web content management, or another relevant field is required.
• Experience in copywriting, editing, and translating web content from English to Arabic is required.
• Experience using content management systems (CMS), photo editing software, web analytics, accessibility is desirable.
• Experience with various versions of Drupal and recent versions of WordPress is desirable.
• Experience in DRR, climate change or sustainable development is desirable.

Languages

• Fluency in English and Arabic (both oral and written) are required.
