Job Description

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western is seeking to hire a Social Media Specialist to work within the Marketing Department. The incumbent will provide their social media expertise in part by creating consistent, high-quality social media content on a variety of platforms that engages a diverse audience, attracts prospective students, increases brand awareness, engagement, student enrollment, and markets Virginia Western as a college of choice by using on-brand style. The incumbent will monitor the college’s engagement and online reputation on social media; collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to effectively tell the college’s story; create and execute integrated, online marketing and engagement campaigns for the college’s social media and digital marketing channels to effectively shape public perceptions and develop a broad community of support; and incorporate student and campus life through collaboration across campus community.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA’s/Required Qualifications Considerable experience managing organization-owned social media platforms, including developing and implementing social media strategy and content based on data and/or needs or priorities of the organization; including but not limited to researching, planning, creating, filming, photography, editing, organizing, monitoring, writing, and posting to social media platforms videos, photos, graphics, gifs, memes, etc.
Experience meeting deadlines in a deadline driven work environment while managing multiple tasks simultaneously with an attention to detail. Experience working with customers from diverse backgrounds. Proven organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Excellent writing and editing skills, including a strong grasp of grammar, style, and on-brand writing.
Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to submit in advance a portfolio that showcases their professional social media work.
Must be able to work occasional evening and weekend hours as needed for on and off campus event/story coverage, as well as social media monitoring/responding.
Additional Considerations Experience in the use of web content management systems and web analytics. Google, Meta, PRSA, HubSpot, Salesforce Marketing Cloud or related certifications are preferred. Work experience with Adobe Creative Cloud is preferred. Experience working in a college setting is preferred.
