Human Development Practice Group

The WBG is the largest provider of development finance and solutions for human development working with high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries to develop country-tailored solutions for human development under the themes of education, health, and social protection and jobs. The People vertical coordinates with other Practice Groups to ensure a coordinated and integrated approach to development challenges, and through the World Bank Regional Units is expected to deliver the strongest and most pertinent support to our client countries.

The Social Protection Global Practice

  • The World Bank Group’s Social Protection (SP) Global Practice is dedicated to enhancing social protection systems aimed at achieving universal coverage by 2030. Our mission also focuses on improving income opportunities for the most vulnerable households. Recognizing the interrelated nature of these challenges, the World Development Report (WDR) 2019, titled The Changing Nature of Work, emphasizes the need to reform social protection systems in response to evolving technological landscapes. Additionally, the WDR 2023 on Migrant, Refugees, and Societies advocates for policies that enable workers to capitalize on global labor market opportunities while contributing to their home communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Social Protection Specialist will play a pivotal role in advancing the SP Global Practice’s migration initiatives. The World Bank is recognized as a global leader in this domain, supported by a dedicated community of staff and Team Leaders (TTLs) working in alignment with SP’s Migration Global Solutions Group (GSG). This position will report to the Practice Manager for Global Engagement and collaborate closely with the Global Lead (GL) for the Migration GSG.

Specific Activities:

  • Knowledge Generation and Support to Operations: Contribute to the Migration GSG’s knowledge production and operational initiatives, focusing on critical topics such as:
  • Data collection, monitoring, and evaluation related to migration.
  • Bilateral labor mobility agreements and Global Skills Partnerships.
  • Institutional and systems development for migration.
  • Inclusion strategies for migrants and refugees in labor and social assistance programs.
  • The impact of technology and climate change on migration patterns.
  • Learning and Development: Design and implement learning events, including core courses, forums, and initiatives to develop capacity and skills for staff, clients, and partners.
  • Corporate Engagement: Provide strategic guidance on management priorities relevant to global knowledge and the World Bank Group’s operations concerning migration.
  • Community Building: Develop both formal and informal initiatives to foster connections among Migration GSG members, facilitating the sharing of knowledge and best practices.
  • Client and Partner Outreach: Proactively engage with clients, partners, and donors to enhance dialogue, operational collaboration, and partnerships.
  • Cross-Sectoral Linkages: Establish connections with other GSGs and Global Practices through innovative and collaborative initiatives.
  • The candidate will report to Practice Manager for Global Engagement and work closely with the Global Lead (GL) for the Migration GSG.
