The opportunity:

The Centre for Population Genomics (CPG) is on the lookout for a talented Full Stack Software Engineer to join our dynamic Rare Disease Team. This is a unique opportunity to merge cutting-edge technology with groundbreaking genomic research to make a real impact on the diagnosis and discovery of rare genetic disorders.

In this role you will:

  • Development and Support: Create and maintain web-based tools like seqr to offer intuitive access to complex genomic datasets.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with a diverse team of computational biologists, genomic scientists, clinicians, and researchers across Australia.
  • Innovation: Develop novel analysis methods, tools, interfaces, and visualisations in direct collaboration with domain experts.
  • Integration: Ensure all solutions are secure, resilient, and seamlessly integrated with the broader engineering infrastructure.
  • Open Source Commitment: Contribute to open-source software development, adhering to best practices for widespread use and impactful research.

Role Type: 2-year full time contract

Salary: $104k – $126k p.a plus superannuation + NFP salary packaging benefits

Location: Sydney or Melbourne with the ability to work remotely

This role will report directly to Cas Simons, the Rare Disease Program Lead, and work closely with other members of the Centre’s software team, genomic analysis teams, and computational groups at Garvan and MCRI. Our ideal candidate will be eager to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to a shared mission of advancing genomic research.

What is the Centre for Population Genomics?

The Centre for Population Genomics (CPG) is a collaborative initiative of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Garvan) in Sydney and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) in Melbourne. The Centre is directed by Daniel MacArthur who previously led a team at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in Boston that was responsible for the development and open release of the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD), a collection of genetic data from over 140,000 individuals that has become one of the most widely-used reference databases in human genetics.

What we need from you:

  • A BCST / BIT / BE degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, bioinformatics engineering, biomedical engineering or a related field.
  • Solid experience with Python and Typescript/Javascript, including a deep understanding of building and testing performant, decoupled, and maintainable code.
  • Proven experience in developing or supporting web applications using the Django/React web stack or similar modern toolchains, demonstrating proficiency in leveraging the capabilities of these technologies to deliver robust and user-friendly applications.
  • Proficiency in working with databases such as Postgres, MariaDB, and MySQL, including expertise in query optimisation techniques, such as indexes and joins.
