About the role

If you’re a motivated and experienced commercial property solicitor seeking a challenging,
rewarding and varied role, apply now to join our dynamic team at Sustrans.

You’ll be the expert advising our Estates team and wider colleagues on issues relating to our
diverse land interests across the National Cycle Network (NCN), cycle paths, old railway paths,
agricultural lands, and mixed-use properties. You’ll also work with our Contracts Officer to
identify risks in contracts where we’re commissioned to deliver new projects. Your role will
influence our Asset strategy, inform key decisions on which work projects we take on and enable
colleagues to understand legal implications and proceed with confidence.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advising and providing conveyancing services to enable land, or rights over land, to be
    divested or acquired, in England and Wales
  • Advising colleagues on contracts where we are being commissioned or funded to undertake new
    projects
  • Acting as a sounding board to non-lawyers in Sustrans who regularly review contracts (eg
    our Contracts Officer and Head of Construction)

We offer true hybrid working, a flexible mix of working from home and occasional travel to a
nearby office hub.

Requirements:

  • Experienced commercial property solicitor with a strong understanding of commercial property transactions including acquisition and sale of land and interests over
    land.
  • Experience of providing advice on and drafting amendments to commercial contracts
  • Ability to provide pragmatic advice and communicate effectively with stakeholders of
    varying legal knowledge.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and without supervision.
  • Experience in supervising or supporting junior lawyers and non-legally qualified
    contractors is advantageous.
