Step into a leadership role, guiding field operations focused on sampling and biological data collection for Chinook, steelhead, coho, and chum salmon in the Lower Columbia River.
Envision yourself overseeing and mentoring Fisheries Technicians in the field while collaborating with senior Biologists to refine sampling strategies that promote the long-term recovery of fish populations.

Working Conditions:
Work setting, including hazards:
Schedule: Four 10-hour shifts per week, rotating. May require long days, nights, weekends, and some holidays when fieldwork and/or other projects require it.
Travel Requirements: Travel required between office and field sites.
Tools and Equipment: Towing vehicles, normal hand and carpentry tools, winches, pulleys, and blocks, walking sticks with gaff hooks, knives, machetes, loppers, catarafts, 4×4 vehicles, 200’ beach seines, passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag injector and reader, coded wire tag (CWT) detector, handheld data loggers, IPads, Garmin in reach units, scales, computer/palmtop computer, motorboats (typically 18-21’ jet-pump or prop powered boats), non-motorized pontoon catarafts, dissolved oxygen (DO) meters, and flow meters. Chainsaws as needed upon successful completion of certified training.
Customer Interactions: Interact with landowners in the field and discuss objectives of projects and intent of surveys being completed in the area. Landowners’ pets and wildlife may be encountered in the field. May interact with personnel from other State and/or Federal agencies.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Option 1: Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science and four (4) years of experience as a Scientific Technician.
Option 2: Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science and four (4) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a health or safety professional, biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural or environmental science classes.
