Specialist Advisor – Ecology and Biodiversity

Salary: £28,273 – £36,648 pa pro-rata (dependent upon experience and qualifications)
Hours: 30 hours per week
Contract: Permanent
Based: Lewes and Eastbourne

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a busy, friendly, and professional team within the
Green Consultancy department of Lewes and Eastbourne Council’s within the Regulatory and Place
team.

We are looking to recruit an experienced Ecology and Biodiversity officer. Your role will be to
support the delivery of the Council’s functions and activities with respect to ecology and
nature conservation, by providing specialised ecological/biodiversity advice and support. You
will be responsible for advising on and implementing the councils plans and policies in
relation to biodiversity, completing/assessing/contracting ecological surveys and reports,
developing new projects to reconnect wildlife and people; promoting the work of the team and
developing new and innovative ways to engage with the community, working in partnership where
appropriate. You will also advise and assist with, ecological improvements, conservation and
environmental issues, nature conservation projects, write and implement management plans, and
undertake engagement activities across both Lewes and Eastbourne councils.

You will be required to have obtained a qualification in ecology, conservation management, or
other relevant field, and hold solid experience with engagement and land management.

Requirements:

• Qualifications to Postgraduate level or equivalent in a relevant subject
• Knowledge and understanding of biodiversity conservation and enhancement, including
  legislation, designated sites, and biodiversity survey and assessment.
• Knowledge and understanding of Countryside Stewardship schemes.
• Experience and/or understanding of implementing nature strategies and projects in
  partnership with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Effective communication skills with a wide range of customers and others
• Good understanding & demonstrable experience in working with landowners and/or other
  stakeholders towards conservation outcomes.
• A working knowledge of current and evolving wildlife policy and legislation
• Experience with project management and contractor management
• Knowledge and ability to apply for funding/grants.
• Coordination skills – the ability to manage competing priorities.
• Experience working within the community and supporting volunteers.
• Good written and verbal communication
• Enthusiasm for ecology and the environment in the UK
• Habitat and botanical identification skills
• An organised approach to work and flexibility as weekend and evening hours may be required.
• A high level of motivation

A full driving license and access to your own transport.

The authority has moved to home working and therefore the role will involve home working
combined with site visits.
