Job Summary:

The Geostrategy North workstream and Indo-Pacific Program are seeking a paid trainee to assist with research on Russian and Chinese interests and activities in the Arctic region. Trainees will track and analyze military postures, commercial activities, and research efforts affecting the region. This traineeship offers the opportunity to work closely with GMF fellows and staff on in-depth research questions focused on US national security and transatlantic competitiveness. Trainees will also get the opportunity to attend relevant external meetings and events.

Trainees will benefit from exposure to GMF’s network, and will gain valuable research, analysis, and writing experiences. This traineeship requires on-site work and trainees must maintain an address in the Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland area.

Trainees are paid DC Minimum wage of $17.00 an hour and are offered an ideal opportunity to acquire substantive professional experience for those interested in a career in public policy or international affairs.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Excellent analytic and writing skills and previous research experience.
  • Strong interest in US-Russia/China relations.
  • Familiarity with and interest in Chinese and/or Russian strategic and economic priorities
  • Familiarity with and interest in Arctic security questions
  • Prior research focused on security questions affecting the sea, air, and space domain and familiarity with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea is a plus.
  • Fluency in English is required; Russian language skills are strongly desired; Mandarin language skills are a plus, but not required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Comfortable multi-tasking and working independently.
  • Graduate student pursuing a degree in Russian area studies or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience in a think tank, foundation, NGO, government body, media outlet, or similar organization preferred.

Start and Length of Traineeship:

  • Preferred starting date: Monday, February 12, 2024
  • Preferred time commitment: 15-20 hours per week, Monday–Friday between 9 AM to 5 PM. Work has to be performed on-site in GMF’s Washington, DC office.
  • Duration of traineeship: 3-4 months
