SUMMARY:
The Catalina Museum of Art and History, located on Catalina
Island, seeks an experienced part-time (30 hours per week)
Development professional to lead annual fundraising. CMAH’s annual
budget is $1.4M with a mission to collect, preserve, and promote
the culture and history of Santa Catalina Island and to bring
unique exhibitions to Catalina. Founded in 1953, the Museum
relocated to its current home, the Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner
Building in the heart of Avalon in 2016 and in 2023 completed a $2M
Capital Campaign and construction of a new 1,000 square-foot
Education center.
CMAH educates, informs, and interprets the art and history of
Santa Catalina Island, convening residents and Island visitors in
an exploration of the people and cultures that make Catalina
unique. In addition to preserving the Island’s historic archive,
CMAH offers art and history exhibitions, music and dance
performances, lectures, films, and engaging educational programs
that serve 20,000 people annually. CMAH’s education programs
encourage K – 12 students to enjoy the creative process as they
think critically, problem-solve, and engage with CMAH’s unique
collection. CMAH’s educational programs for children ages 0 – 15
serve 2,500 children and youth per year.
In 2022, Sheila Bergman became the new Executive Director. With
a background in Museum management and a passion for both art and
history, Sheila seeks an experienced, creative partner to help
bring the CMAH into a new era. This is an exciting time to
join a growing Museum located in one of the most picturesque and
highly visited tourist destinations in Southern California.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Partner with the Executive Director to strategize, plan,
implement and assess annual fundraising (in FY23 this represented
$830k). - Work closely with the Executive Director, Board Chair,
Development Committee Chair and key staff and stakeholders to
strengthen and grow a sustainable, broad-based annual fundraising
program. - Serve as a senior member of the leadership team.
- Create and manage a comprehensive major donor giving program to
increase non-member major donor support. - Steward a portfolio of up to 50 donors and prospects
- Actively support the Executive Director, Board Chair and others
in the planning and implementation of activities in their
stewardship of individual donors or prospects. - Deliver presentations on CMAH programs to various community,
corporate and non-for-profit groups (i.e. Yacht Clubs) as
needed. - Perform networking at selected community, industry, and
leadership events with CMAH’s interest at the forefront. - Be responsible for annual direct response program, working in
partnership with the marketing and social media team. - Manage institutional and government grants to support
educational and public programs. - Coordinate any special event fundraisers, partnering with the
Board or others as needed. - Manage a current staff of two part-time professionals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent organizational skills with an ability to think
proactively, prioritize work, and meet deadlines. - Proven frontline fundraising experience with an emphasis on
individual giving. - Effective communication skills (writing, speaking, and
listening). - Team management skills and ambition to grow a department.
- Experience in the cultural space, ideally museums and a desire
to learn. - Solid experience with CRM management systems and standard
office software.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- While not essential to live on Catalina Island, residence in
Southern California is required. - Willingness and ability to travel to Catalina Island on a
regular basis as needed. - Valid driver’s license and legal status to work in the USA is
required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
- The position expects 30 hours/week and offers a salary range of
$65-70k depending on experience (annualized at 40 hours a week to
$90,000) - A generous package of Benefits and PTO is offered.
