Position Summary: The Office of International Relations (OIR) is part of NEA’s Education Policy and Implementation center (EPIC). The successful candidate analyzes international education policy and research, geopolitical issues, and trade union affairs and incorporates learning relevant to NEA’s mission, vision and strategic priorities. The candidate possess diplomacy and tact particularly in political sensitive situations and settings and will help NEA establish and maintain relationships with and/or monitor US legislation and governmental agencies, the United Nations and relevant UN agencies (e.g. UNESCO and ILO), foundations, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) on issues that affect children, education, the education profession, human rights, and trade union rights. The candidate will interact with diverse constituents and cultures; articulate NEA values, policies and positions in domestic and international forums; and help NEA cultivate productive relationships with Education International and its affiliated unions around the world. The candidate will produce and revise Association policies; design and deliver trainings and presentations; author and amend publications, testimony, letters, leadership speeches and talking points and other written materials; support international exchanges and international delegations attending meetings and events; represent the Association before a wide range of audiences, agencies and organizations; and conduct other work as assigned. The successful candidate will report to the Senior Director for NEA’s Education and Policy Implementation Center (EPIC). To carry out responsibilities, the successful candidate will travel frequently; utilize a combination of languages—primarily English — as well as Spanish and/or French (ideally all three); use a computer and/or laptop, associated software, and other office technology.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Advanced degree in international affairs, public policy/political science, labor/trade union rights or human rights; or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills may be acquired.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the essential criteria listed below, five years of professional experience with progressive responsibility related to designing and implementing international and national programs, advocacy campaigns, and activities, preferably related to international affairs, policy/legislation, international education systems, labor/trade union right or human rights. Experience must include established working relationships with organizations like those, or consisting of those, mentioned in the position summary above. Written and verbal fluency in Spanish and/or French. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Possesses the ability to synthesize complex ideas into accessible information that can then be utilized and delivered in multiple communication modes. Demonstrated diplomacy and tact handing sensitive information as well as navigating diverse cultural and multi-ethnic settings.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Sample work products (i.e., publications, presentations, trainings, educational program documentation, etc.) that demonstrate content expertise, technical skills, writing ability, and values of equity and equality, will be required in advance of any interview. Finalists for the job will be asked to complete a writing exercise. The successful candidate must be able to occasionally work extended hours on evenings and weekends and must be able to travel frequently (30-60 overnights per year).
