Diabetes Research Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Veterinary Technician position. The incumbent assists managing staff in attending to the health of assigned animals. Specifically, the Senior Veterinary Technician ensures the safety and well-being of the animals while complying with applicable rules and regulations.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

  • Oversees incoming and outgoing animal shipments and assesses the health of and necessary treatments for the animals.

  • Supports physical examination schedules and organizes regular health screening for long-term animals.

  • Supervises inventory and assists with the purchase of medical equipment.

  • Provides pre- and post-operative care and anesthetic monitoring.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

  • Independent monitoring and care of pre-clinical research animals including, but not limited to, cynomolgous and rhesus monkeys.

  • Independent monitoring of blood glucose levels, and administration of insulin and other drugs as needed; handle insulin administration using sliding scales; knowledge of diabetes care; administration of multiple, highly complex therapeutic agents without the need for assistance; independent recognition of clinical problems and notification of PI and veterinarians.

  • Preparing animals and OR for surgery; anesthesia maintenance of animals during surgery, assistance in surgical procedures and post-operative monitoring.

  • Preparation of complex checklists for transplant recipients, including timelines for administration of multi-agent drug therapies, monitoring of immunological and metabolic status; preparation of weekly schedules based on multiple checklists.

  • Assisting in the preparation of standard operating procedures (SOP). 

  • Independent, long term post-operative follow-up of animals.

  • Administration of metabolic challenges; collection of multiple different blood samples for various tests. 

  • Independent day, night, and weekend work, and at any time an animal’s health is in a state of emergency, with notification of appropriate parties in case of complications.

  • Reporting to Waldo Diaz (Supervisor) and Dr. Kenyon any problems which arise, whether it be with regards to condition of the animals, maintenance of supplies in surgical suites and animal rooms.

  • Performing blood collections or surgical procedures and treatment of the animals.

  • General lab responsibilities, including but not limited to, proper maintenance of lab equipment, accurate data collection and entry, inventory, assisting with determination of costs of supplies and procedures.

  • Entry of clinical data into animal health records Constant monitoring of animal medical records for completeness, consistency, and compliance with university, state, and federal regulations.

  • Frequent and professional engagement with university personnel, including staff and leadership of the Division of Veterinary Resources. Other duties as assigned.

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
